Yo, what's cracking everybody? James Koh, Matt Harmon here with you. You're listening to Reception Perception. Matt, how are you doing today, pal?
Matt Harmon (0:23)
Doing good. Back at home base after a little weekend on the West Coast.
Never makes me not regret leaving every time I go back. But here we are. We're back in home base. Was able to shout out. Listen, this is an unsponsored endorsement here. Shout out to American Airlines. I know nobody ever gives the airlines any credit.
James Koh (0:45)
No.
Matt Harmon (0:46)
I'm not going to speak on some of the actual logistics of the traveling. But for at least one time in human history, perhaps the time in human history it was needed most. The American Airlines Wi-Fi was incredible, so that I could watch games pretty much all Sunday from a couple of flights back here to the East Coast. While I don't love to be out of the house on football Sundays, this was obviously I had to do it for one of my wife's best friends' wedding, had to be there, had to be done.
Yeah, here we are. It worked out because shout out to American Airlines Wi-Fi.
James Koh (1:23)
Okay, lovely.
Matt Harmon (1:24)
I absolutely love it.
But it was good. It was good to be back and it was a crazy Sunday football man. Thank God I wasn't able to watch so much because it was wild.
James Koh (1:34)
Yeah, a lot of one score games. I think I actually even saw a stat that this was one of the most one score games that the NFL has ever enjoyed. A couple of storylines obviously coming out of Sunday. And one would be a man where I cannot believe the Raiders are 3-0, but we have a big time trade that just went down this morning on a Monday.
In regards to JJ McCarthy, I want to break this down from a Malik neighbor's standpoint, a New York Giants standpoint.
And by the way, like Minnesota is the epicenter because Justin Jefferson is dealing with an injury here as well. But let's start with the JJ McCarthy thing because that's the newest thing here. It gets traded over to New York. And let's be real, New York does, they do need some quarterback help. James Winston, while fun, I love the post-pre and half-time interviews for James Winston. The product on the field is leaving a lot to be desired. Just I tell you right now, man, it feels like James, I know he says he's prepared and all that kind of stuff, bro. But like when you watch him play, it's just backyard football. It makes you question whether or not he actually truly understands or knows the playbook.
Matt Harmon (2:49)
I mean, was it on the sicko show that I said to you or was it?
James Koh (2:53)
I think it was a sicko show.
Matt Harmon (2:55)
Yeah, I was like, he looks like a guy that spent all off-season being a World Cup content creator or just a general meme at this point.
Look, now the Giants have two meme quarterbacks because JJ McCarthy obviously was one of the biggest memes of the NFL last season, the nine meme, whatever. So I don't know, man. I think this is strange on a couple of levels for the Giants. One, they gave up a fifth round pick. I know that seems like not that much for a guy that was a former top NFL draft pick, a first rounder. But I mean, let's just be straight here. That's a pretty decent bit of capital to give up for a guy that they're saying is basically just a backup plan. That's what the reporters, the insiders have come out and said today. I don't know about that. That seems like a little bit more than you're hoping this guy is a long-term backup and somebody that doesn't see the field this year. I think that's pretty crazy. Let's also not remember. They gave James, they paid James Winston some money this off season to be the backup. So it feels a little bit like the Giants are just flailing here.
Dart obviously going into this off season will be a question mark as well. Have you seen enough from Jackson Dart to say like this is your set it and forget it franchise quarterback? I think you've seen a lot of good and unfortunately, the one thing that you saw this year, the one game was really good for Jackson Dart. But he is definitely a guy that hasn't consistently stayed on the field. And again, really promising. But would you be walking into next season without any competition for him? Is JJ McCarthy going to be competition for him? JJ McCarthy was one of the worst starting quarterbacks in the NFL in 2025 and lost a camp competition to be Kyler Murray's backup. Not even just lost a job to Kyler Murray, he lost a job, he lost a competition basically to be his backup to Carson Wentz. And we'll touch on the Vikings in a second, like I don't, there's a lot to actually criticize them for, I think in this moment with how they've handled the quarterback stuff, but it just feels like an odd trade for New York, considering that they gave up a fifth round pick for McCarthy. And it doesn't make me feel good for the outlook of Malik neighbors for the rest of the season. Neighbors certainly, as to be expected, doesn't look like himself right now. He's dealing with that shoulder injury as well that popped out and he popped back in on Wednesday.
