Did you say spinach?
Vanessa (1:03)
No, I said Spanish.
Evan (1:05)
Okay. With Evan.
Vanessa (1:14)
And Vanessa. Hola, amigos!
Evan (1:23)
Hello, friends! Me llamo Evan. My name's Evan.
Vanessa (1:27)
Y yo me llamo Vanessa. And my name's Vanessa.
Welcome to our review for Lesson 9 of Eat Your Spanish, where we learn the names of four fruits in Spanish.
Evan (1:36)
That's right! We learned that in Spanish, apple is manzana, banana is banana, strawberry is fresa, and orange is naranja.
Vanessa (1:47)
Great job, Evan! That's right!
Evan (1:49)
Today, we'll be quickly reviewing our words from last week, and then we'll spend some time playing a fun game with them.
Vanessa (1:55)
Then at the very end of our episode, we'll give one special listener the chance to ask us a question about how to say a word or phrase in Spanish. But first, it's time for a little review of our words from last week.
Evan (2:07)
I hope you're ready to have some fun. Here we go.
So, Vanessa, how do you say apple, banana, strawberry, and orange in Spanish?
Vanessa (2:41)
Great question, Evan.
First, before we do that, I want to explain a little something about the word for banana in Spanish. It can be a little tricky since there are so many types of bananas in Spanish-speaking countries, and not only that, but in some countries, other native languages are used to say banana. There are really yummy bananas in Ecuador where I grew up called platanos, or plantains in English, and they are much larger than the bananas we usually eat in the United States. They're usually eaten salted, fried, and squished, and those are called patacones. Mmm, so good.
There are also other small bananas that are very sweet and delicious that I've heard people calling guineos. But for today, we'll use the word that is commonly used in many countries around the world.
Evan (3:25)
Sounds good. Thanks for explaining that to us.
Vanessa (3:28)
My pleasure. Now let's learn how to say the names of the fruits. Apple in Spanish is manzana.
Banana is actually a cognate, so that means it sounds almost the same in two different languages. So the word for banana is banana. The word for strawberry is fresa. And last but not least, the word for orange is naranja.
Now I'll say them one at a time, and you can repeat them along with me. Are you all ready?
Evan (3:58)
Ready.
Vanessa (3:59)
Okay, we'll start with apple. In Spanish, we say manzana. So repeat after me. Manzana.
Evan (4:07)
Manzana.
Vanessa (4:09)
Manzana.
Manzana. Manzana. Manzana. Manzana. Manzana. Manzana. Manzana. Manzana. Manzana.
Manzana. Muy bien, amigos. Two down, two to go. Next is strawberry. The word for strawberry in Spanish is fresa. Let's say it all together. Fresa.
Evan (4:40)
Fresa.
Vanessa (4:46)
You got it! And last but not least, we'll do orange. For orange, we say, naranja. So repeat after me, naranja, naranja, naranja, naranja.
Excelente, amigos. Way to go.
Evan (5:04)
Excellent job, friends.
Vanessa (5:10)
Hello again, amigos. Nice work practicing our new words. Now we're going to use them to play an exciting game.
Evan (5:25)
In this game, we're going to make a fruit salad together using the fruits we just named in Spanish. The tricky part is we're going to describe the fruits without saying their names in English, and it will be your job to guess which fruit we are talking about, and to say the name of that fruit in Spanish. Are you ready to begin?
Okay. Here's our first clue.
Vanessa (5:47)
For the first fruit in our fruit salad, I'm thinking of putting in one of my favorites. It's red and juicy, and it has tiny seeds all over the outside.
There are also green leaves on the top, and I'll have to chop it off before putting it into the fruit salad bowl.
Evan (6:03)
Okay, amigos. What is the Spanish word for this fruit that Vanessa is talking about?
Time's up. If you said fresa, which is the Spanish word for strawberry, you're correct. Way to go! Now, let's chop it up and add it to the fruit bowl. Everybody turn your hand sideways and start chopping.
