From Carolla One Studios in Glendale, California, this is The Adam Carolla Show.
Adam's guest today, documentary filmmaker, Evan Hayes. Plus the news with Rudy Pavich and now, Adam Carolla.
**Adam Carolla** (1:38)

Evan Hayes is zooming in. Evan does a lot of documentaries. Learning To Fly is the latest. It'll be in theaters. That'll be coming up in a few weeks.
Let's see. Follows the story of former competitive runner turned photographer. And it's a documentary about, well, I mean, is it like ultimate marathoning, like major mega runs?
**Evan Hayes** (2:15)
Yeah, these are these are 104 mile races often, more elevation than Everest. These are runners that are running through the night. So it's the most extreme.
**Adam Carolla** (2:29)
Yeah. And you say more elevation than Everest. And what you mean, I guess, is more combined elevation, right? Like it's not just one big, long 26,000 foot uphill climb, when you add all the elevation into it, you end up going further than Everest.
**Evan Hayes** (2:49)
That's exactly right.
For example, one of the races in the film, UTMB Ultra Trail to Mont Blanc, essentially follows this trail around the Mont Blanc Massif. So this huge number of alpine mountains. So just like you're saying, I mean, you're going up and down thousands and thousands of feet, you know, over the course of, you know, 10 to 15 hours.
**Adam Carolla** (3:14)
And you produced Free Solo, which won the Oscar a few years back. Very, very compelling.
Doc, is what we're really talking about, like when we're talking about all this stuff, because we're kind of at a point in our society where there's Grubhub and air conditioning and Uber, you know, there's no more Donner Pass or wagon trains or fighting Indians. It's all whatever. So now there's a competition to see who can torture themselves the most, but unnecessarily. Like, you know, in the past, you had to be an ultra marathoner because you had to get from one village to the next village and warn them that trouble, blah, blah, blah. Now we're going in a circle, you know? And, you know, it's cold plunges, it's, you know, I sit in a sauna, it's 180 degrees, I run, I ride on a Schwinn stationary bike for an hour until I die. Like, it's just kind of about testing yourself now, right?
**Evan Hayes** (4:18)
I think it's about testing yourself, but it's what comes from testing yourself, right? It's what you kind of get out the other side of it. You know, you mentioned Free Solo, hopefully some listeners have seen that film about Alex Honnold. I don't find Alex that strange of a guy at all.
I think he's a genuinely great human being with a wife and kids who likes to push himself to kind of experience a different kind of version of, I don't know, just seeking his happy place. And I don't know, I think there's a lot of value in that.
**Adam Carolla** (5:02)
I'm not suggesting anyone's weird. I'm saying it's where we're at. Like we have invited this on ourselves. There is no, everything is so convenient, so easy, so overnight that we actually have to create these hurdles and challenges as a species. Otherwise, we're sort of gnawing on our own legs. You know, like we're kind of going insane. So I don't think it's strange at all.
