Frank Reich's Play-Calling Under Fire After Jets' Late Collapse

The Carton Show with Craig Carton & Chris McMonigle

September 21, 2026

Analysis of the New York Jets centers on the disconnect between a strong defense and questionable offensive play-calling. They debate the logic behind using shotgun formations in short-yardage situations while evaluating Geno Smith's performance under center.

Or not. The defense has not been the problem, though. Obviously, they kind of collapsed late after some special teams snapped foos as well. And I know nobody wants to hear it. The New York Jets right now, pending tonight's game, of course, with the Giants and the Rams, because the Giants, I think, are top five off of week one.

The New York Giants have the second best defense in football right now.

They're top four in rushing yards allowed, top four in passing yards allowed. And they don't have the two ends to show for it. And that's the problem here, that you got, Ashley, you and I both thought the Jets offense is gonna be a lot better than the defense this year, because of all the weapons they have, their returning offensive line, a veteran quarterback, if not the greatest quarterback, at least a veteran, competent quarterback, right? And a veteran competent play call that we thought, and Frank Reich, the defense has been good. Will McDonnell was in no show yesterday. Yeah, we actually checked in the 3rd quarter if he was even playing. I did not hear Will McDonnell's name a single time in that first half. Did you?

Chris McMonigle (1:06)

I remember.

Craig Carton (1:08)

So, in any event...

Chris McMonigle (1:09)

After having a miserable camp, at least that's, you know, we're not there, but that's the reported. And then having a strong week one, yeah, no show in week number two. But the defense has been good.

Craig Carton (1:20)

They've essentially done their job to me.

Chris McMonigle (1:22)

I mean, the first half, the Packers had no idea what to do offensively. He throws for 145 yards in the game. They run for 63 I mean...

Right.

Craig Carton (1:33)

You held the net, it fell off, and it's 200 yards of total offense. Right. And it collapsed in the last eight minutes. Yeah.

Chris McMonigle (1:38)

I mean, listen.

Craig Carton (1:39)

That's what they did.

Chris McMonigle (1:39)

There was a turn and you could feel it.

Craig Carton (1:42)

There were kick returns.

Chris McMonigle (1:43)

And like one of the main reasons I was screaming about the timeout is, you don't like the direction of the game. I'm not excited to get to overtime with the way the last quarter was played.

Craig Carton (1:52)

Because they took all the momentum.

Chris McMonigle (1:54)

They have all the momentum.

Craig Carton (1:55)

Yeah. We call that mojo.

Chris McMonigle (1:56)

Yes. All the mojo. Some people call it mo mo. You could go mo mo.

Craig Carton (2:00)

Momentum mo mo.

Chris McMonigle (2:02)

Yeah, I guess.

Craig Carton (2:02)

Some people call it mojo. I think mojo. We didn't have it.

Chris McMonigle (2:05)

I think since Austin Powers entered our lives in the late 90s.

Craig Carton (2:08)

What are we calling it?

Chris McMonigle (2:09)

Mojo.

Craig Carton (2:10)

You're going mojo?

Chris McMonigle (2:10)

Oh, I'm going mojo.

Craig Carton (2:11)

He lost his mojo. Yeah. Okay. Go ahead.

We had no mojo or mo mo for that matter.

Chris McMonigle (2:17)

No mo mo. No mojo.

Craig Carton (2:18)

Yeah. No mo.

Chris McMonigle (2:20)

No mo.

Craig Carton (2:21)

Yeah. Here's James of Mount Sinai.

Chris McMonigle (2:24)

I'm trying to win that game with a minute left. I'm not trying to go to overtime.

Craig Carton (2:28)

Hey, Jimmy, what's up, kid?

SPEAKER_3 (2:30)

Hey, what's going on? Let me step out where I am real quick. All right.

I wasn't going to start with this, but and you guys stole all the thunder because we've been talking about the same thing all day. But Geno Smith obviously is not the problem. And I'll take it a step further. I've seen enough out of him the last two games that he is more than confident and we can win games with him.

Craig Carton (2:48)

Absolutely.

SPEAKER_3 (2:49)

I've seen enough for only two games, but I've seen enough. So I'm winded.

Chris McMonigle (2:55)

I've seen enough to at least say Geno Smith is not only what we saw last year with the Raiders, like Geno Smith can still play.

Craig Carton (3:01)

He's not the problem yet.

Chris McMonigle (3:02)

And he's certainly not anywhere near the problem in this loss.

SPEAKER_3 (3:05)

Yeah. So here's the reason I call. Then again, we've been talking about this all day.

The thing that gets me, for lack of a better word, I'm frightened. And I raised my kids to become jet fans. And we're all saying the same thing yesterday. Is the coaching staff is doing things that don't make sense. Like they're illogical. Like they don't, it's not about a decision made here or there or a judgment call. They're doing things that don't make sense. Okay. And we've been talking about them all day. There's a couple of things that I picked up yesterday that we didn't even talk about. And they're also not using Hall and Allen wisely. Okay.
