Welcome in, busy hour on tap. Thursday Night Football, game four, NLCS, and we begin the hour talking a lot of college football. Professional, better Brad Powers joins the program now. Follow him on X, he is at Brad Powers 7 Website is bradpowers.com. Hey Brad, thanks for the time today. We appreciate it. We just talked about one of your tweets earlier today with the college football playoff expanding to 24 teams. Looks like it's gonna start next year already.
We hate it. Overall, just how much do you hate this on a scale from one to 10?
Brad Powers (0:51)
Spinal tap, speakers go to 11 I hate it as an 11, as a fan I do. And keep in mind, we're just not, I mean, we are going from 4 to 24 in 3 years. Keep in mind, the BCS, we had 16 years of that, and then we had 10 years of the 4 And all of a sudden, after just 3 years of the 12 team, not even 3, we're at 2.5, we decided to expand it more. I just, the thing that's made college football one of the loves of my life is that there's urgency every week, games matter, especially at the top of the sport. I mean, keep in mind, college football has always been about the Blue Bloods, the top of the sport, as far as winning national titles. I mean, you can have great stories every now and then. You're in Iowa or Wisconsin making a Rose Bowl or whatnot, but it's always been about the top, and it's never been about Cinderella. So people saying, oh, this is great, that nine and three Kansas State can make it in.
Get the hell out of here with that. I mean, it's just, I just, that all the games that have great meaning this week, and there's a lot of them, mean a hell of a lot less than the new 2014 playoff. They just do.
What concerns me is the best week of the year in college football, the last week, rivalry week, means a hell of a lot less. I mean, you got to put nine in two teams, 10 in one teams, and who cares? I mean, I'm more worried about, do I want to get my players hurt, or do I want to start gearing up for the playoffs? I don't know. That's a legitimate question you got to ask yourself. And then, you know, conference championships, you can say, you know, that they meant less here in the 12-team playoff, but I mean, call me old school, but man, I was tuned in to the SEC Championship game for the last 35 years. Now that's gone by the wayside to make for, you know, Vanderbilt taking on, you know, Virginia in the first round of a 2014 playoff. I mean, I'm out on all of it. I just am. I mean, as a fan, I mean, it's the day the music died. I feel like, you know, somebody died, a family member died today.
Pauly Howard (2:34)
How about how these conferences are going to decide the conference winners? And do you think ratings are going to go down not only the first three weeks, but when they start this going in December and maybe going head to head against NFL games?
Brad Powers (2:49)
Yeah, I mean, I don't know. The conference, I mean, keep in mind the conferences are so big now, you can play half the teams in your conference. I mean, I'm still waiting. Georgia hasn't played at Texas A&M despite the fact that Texas A&M has been in the league for 15 years. I'll say that again. Georgia has never played at Texas A&M, even though they've been in the league for 15 years. So I don't know. I mean, the four or five way ties hang the banners. I mean, everybody gets a trophy, yay.
As far as the ratings, yeah, if I'm the NFL, I start putting games on Saturday because I mean, the thing about College Bowl is there's always been that sense of urgency, hey, this game kind of matters. Now that they don't, we're stopping the NFL from doing, from putting games, not only in December, but maybe even earlier. I mean, for everyone that says the expanded play, oh, they'll get TV ratings. The guaranteed rate bowl between New Mexico and Minnesota had higher TV ratings than JMU and Oregon. I mean, what people want to see is competitive games, not something nonsense, non-competitive, three, four touchdown blowouts, which we will have even after the first round is over.
I'm out on all of it. I can't do it. Any which way you want to go on this, I'm out on.
