College football is back, so Hilton called on me, the superstition concierge, to make your fan rituals a reality. Need a room to match your lucky number? We got you. Wanna make sure our team doesn't wash your lucky jersey? Ooh, that smells lucky.

Hilton's unmatched hospitality can keep up with any superstition. Even a marching band wake up call at 555 in 55 seconds. Hit it! When you need a team that will do whatever it takes on game day, it matters where you stay. Hilton, for the stay.

For the next few weeks, the Rask team are on the road. So what better occasion than now to share some of the audio gold that's buried deep in our vault.

For this episode, we're going back to 2019 when we spoke with Matt Joass, the CIO and founder of Maven Funds Management. While this episode was recorded in late 2019, which is pre-pandemic and pre-AI, Matt himself was a student of artificial intelligence, studying it formally and working in the profession, both kind of as an intellectual angle, but also from an investing angle. Matt's history with investing is discussed in this podcast, as well as the formation of Maven Funds Management. You can find out more on the Maven website. But if you're looking at how a really sophisticated and intellectual investor goes about thinking about the world beaters, about the kind of businesses that just compound again and again and again, this episode is for you. We talk about inflection points, how you can compound your knowledge, blind spots, automation and AI. Again, before it was a thing and how to do deep research into companies from Australia and potentially even abroad.

Matt's journey is very interesting and nuanced, which is what makes this conversation so special. I hope you enjoy this rewind episode with Matt Joass of Maven Funds Management on the Australian Investors Podcast. Hey there, here's a quick note. Owen Raszkiewicz (2:49)

Matt, thanks for joining me on the show.

Matt Joass (2:50)

Thanks very much. Very happy to be here. Very excited.

Owen Raszkiewicz (2:53)

Yeah. I love the positive energy. You and I have been talking about doing this for a long time.

Matt Joass (2:57)

Yeah. I've listened to a lot of the podcasts. Obviously a big fan of yours. So yeah, very keen to join you.

Owen Raszkiewicz (3:02)

Yeah. You have so many insights that probably you and I or others in our circles talk about a lot, but many of those things will be new to the people that are listening to this or watching.

As you know, what I usually do is understand more about you and your motivation for money and investing, and the best way to do that is to kind of track your journey to where you are now. So why don't we just go back to the beginning? Just try to understand early influences towards money mentors, that type of thing, and just set the scene for who you are today.

Matt Joass (3:32)

Yeah, sure. So originally from New Zealand, you might be able to tell from the accent, I'm not sure.

So I grew up in Auckland, New Zealand, which is, I guess, kind of like a smaller Sydney in a lot of ways, but you know, it's a smaller country, which I guess still has a bit of the vibe of being a small country. So you can still, you know, half hour drive, you're in the kind of country if you want to be in the bush. Yeah, no, just a nice place to grow up.

Owen Raszkiewicz (3:58)

Yeah, great. And, you know, we often talk about entrepreneurial streaks as young people that then go on, you know, you see this recurring scene throughout their life, they might start something, fail something, or start something, succeed, but then they come back again and again and again.
