Hey, welcome to the Body Mind Empowerment Podcast.
I'm your host, Siim Land, and I wanted to ask you, do you use these self-quantification devices, something like a Fitbit, or even this Aura Ring that measures your sleep cycles? You know, the reason I ask you this is because these kinds of gadgets and technology, they're becoming more and more a part of our everyday lives.
Using these devices can actually help us to understand our own human nature and our own personal habits a lot better. If you think that counting your calories, measuring your macronutrients, tracking your sleep or your daily step count is somewhat weird, then be prepared for this episode of the Body Mind Empowerment Podcast, because today we have a guest who qualifies and optimizes a lot of things in his life, starting from nutrition and ending with his environment. His name is Bob Troia from New York, and he's an entrepreneur, a biohacker, and a self-experimenter. And our conversation today is quite interesting, because we're going to be talking about the fasting mimicking diet, ketosis using ketone esters and exogenous ketones, and how you can take some blood tests to determine how your individual genetic makeup influences the way you metabolize food, how you should exercise, and what kind of a lifestyle you should follow in general. If you want to support this podcast, then make sure you leave us a review on iTunes and other social media platforms. But now, let's delve deeper into the world of self-quantification and optimization.

Bob Troia (2:06)
Thanks, Siim. Thanks for having me.
Siim Land (2:08)
Nice. First of all, I want to ask you, how did you come up with this kind of a name, what quantified Bob?
Bob Troia (2:16)
So, I've been in this business for a long time. I've been doing a lot of self-experimentation and self-quantification for a number of years, and I set up a blog basically to start getting a lot of my thoughts and a lot of my data kind of down, just more for my own use and for archiving it. And I needed the domain and quantified Bob was the first thing that just came into my mind. I didn't really overthink it.
And the rest is history.
Siim Land (2:40)
So, maybe, can you tell us a little bit about your backstory and what got you into this kind of self-quantifying?
Bob Troia (2:50)
Sure. So, my background is I've been in technology for a number of years, a long time entrepreneur, not doing anything business-wise in the health or wellness or fitness space.
I've always had a personal passion for these areas from the standpoint of being a former athlete. And as you get older, you start learning more about your biology and physiology and just being a curious mind. I also have a background in software development. So for me, a lot of the love of looking at data and uncovering insights out of things is something that I've always had.
Just as far back as I can think back to when I was a teenager and you're tracking workouts and your dietary composition to see does that gain more muscle, does that give you more endurance. And the tools are very simple back then. I mean, we're talking about a notepad and a pen and a scale and a tape measure. But now we've got the technologies really sort of taken off in the last few years so we can get access to things that even five years ago, you just could never get that type of information or insights. And so for me, it's just been pretty amazing to see the amount of information and things we can learn about ourselves.
Siim Land (4:03)
So who do you think you are and who do you call yourself? Like do you think yourself as more of a biohacker, a scientist, an entrepreneur or an athlete or something like that? Who do you think you know consider yourself to be?
Bob Troia (4:17)
Yeah, well, you know, in the business world, I consider myself an entrepreneur and technologist. From the standpoint of health and wellness or biohacking or by itself, there's a term I like to use called citizen scientist, where I don't have a degree, I mean, I have a degree from university, but not an engineering degree, not a medical degree or anything like that.
