What kind of a show are you guys putting on here today?

SPEAKER_3 (0:27)

You're not interested in art?

Adam Kempenaar (0:28)

No.

SPEAKER_3 (0:29)

Well, look, we're going to do this thing.

Adam Kempenaar (0:30)

We're going to have a conversation.

Josh Larsen (0:34)

From Chicago, this is Filmspotting. I'm Josh Larsen.

Adam Kempenaar (0:37)

And I'm Adam Kempenaar.

SPEAKER_4 (0:38)

Something's coming.

Something we may not be able to deter. Before this day is done, we should be faced with an unthinkable decision.

Josh Larsen (0:58)

The final months of the movie year are full of potential blockbusters. You've got Avengers Doomsday, Dune Three. There are also prestige pictures from directors like David Fincher, Robert Eggers and Martin McDonough.

Adam Kempenaar (1:10)

We consider it all in our 2026 fall movie preview draft plus Aaron Sorkin's The Social Reckoning. That and more ahead on Filmspotting.

Welcome to Filmspotting, Josh, our producer Sam does such a nice job getting us ready for these shows, putting our scripts together, giving us bullet points, talking points.

The problem is sometimes he gives us talking points to reference that are smarter than anything that may actually come up, at least in my side of the review. Here I have, when David Fincher's The Social Network came to theaters in the fall of 2010, it seemed to arrive at exactly the right time. Is The Fincher Less Social Reckoning Too Late? We'll discuss. We won't discuss, at least I won't discuss. I don't have anything that profound to say about The Social Reckoning, though I do have a fair amount to say about the film.

Josh Larsen (2:15)

It's a great question. I will attempt to answer it. It is. In a way, I feel like it was answered when this project was announced. I remember feeling like it was a little too late at that point, but the finished product, that's an entirely different thing. So we'll see. Yeah, we'll see what we make of that.

Adam Kempenaar (2:32)

Come to that review to hear Josh having profound remarks later.

Josh Larsen (2:36)

Wow, pressure.

Adam Kempenaar (2:38)

We remind you that Filmspotting is a video podcast. You can watch us talk over at youtube.com/filmspotting.

First up, it's our fall movie preview. A little later than normal, that does give us the chance, Josh, to do something we don't normally do. We like to restrict ourselves a little bit typically, and we would only go up to Thanksgiving, even though that's atypical for fall movie previews that usually go through the end of the year. We would sometimes do a separate holiday movie preview. See, we would milk it for two different lists.

Josh Larsen (3:12)

We were smarter back then.

Adam Kempenaar (3:14)

Yeah, we were smarter than apparently.

And this time, since it's a little later, we're going to do the fall movie preview that does allow us to look through December. That's how we are approaching it. But we're going to do it as a draft because we have found that we enjoy doing the previews this way. It allows us to restrict ourselves to five picks each. We get 10 titles in there, and we know we're not going to have any overlap. That's the best part.

Josh Larsen (3:46)

We're not going to have any overlap. Will we have much fighting over titles? I think that will be interesting. I'm not expecting much, but we'll see. You never know. We both might surprise each other. I think we're both interested in different films over the next couple of months.

Adam Kempenaar (4:03)

I agree. Usually in these drafts, there is a lot, maybe too much strategizing.

We're worried too much about when we can take a certain film and how much fun we might have ruining the other person's list. And you're right. This time, there may be only one or two titles where I can really see that coming into play. I do know that I took a couple titles on my list and bumped them up slightly higher because I thought I may need to get to these sooner. There may be a chance Josh will take them, but that's really not so much because I think with a fall movie preview, there's a case of winning this draft. I don't know if we'll even put together a poll, Josh. It's really more about just getting the films you want.
