Faith vs. Works vs. Chaos Monsters

July 6, 2026
This week we crack open the Epistle of James — a letter that may claim to come from none other than James the brother of Jesus — and wade into one of Christianity's oldest arguments: faith versus works.

You know, Dan, tis the season to be celebrating these United States of America. And one of the things that I like to celebrate is that classic American entrepreneurial spirit. We can get a little cynical about America sometimes, but there is something amazing about that. And it's one of the reasons that I like supporting Brooklyn Bedding. It's a classic American story. The founder, John, didn't come from some big corporate background. He didn't have a degree, he just studied mattresses, bootstrapped the business, and built his own factory from the ground up in Arizona.
Now, that's the kind of determination and grit that actually is fun to talk about, but it's also resulted in some great mattresses.
Dan McClellan (0:42)
Yeah, my mattress that I got from Brooklyn Bedding is the Plankfirm Luxe. It's a Cal King, as I enjoy pointing out to you repeatedly. But I could tell the difference the first night I've slept on this mattress.
Brooklyn Bedding knows sleep isn't one size fits all. They offer mattresses for every body, every sleep style, even in hard to find sizes. And if you're like me, you sleep hot. They have their Glaciotex covers, copper-infused foams, temperature-regulating materials that help keep you cool and comfortable all night long. And they design and assemble every mattress in their Arizona factory. No middlemen, no gimmicks, just top-tier quality, honest pricing, and real American craftsmanship for a much better night's sleep.

I don't think that part of the passage is about its tail. Additionally, check out how stiff I can make my tail.
Hey everybody, I'm Dan McClellan.
Dan Beecher (2:40)
And I'm Dan Beecher.
Dan McClellan (2:42)
And this is Data Over Dogma, where we increase public access to the academic study of the Bible and religion, and we combat the spread of misinformation about the same. And my AC just kicked in, so I'm feeling real good right now. How about you, Dan?
Dan Beecher (2:58)
I'm cool as a cucumber, even though it is hot outside. My AC is fixed. It was broken last week, but it's doing all right now.
Dan McClellan (3:07)
All right.
Dan Beecher (3:07)
So all is well with us. I can't imagine living in any of the centuries previous to us that did not have AC.
Dan McClellan (3:15)
Oh, gosh.
Dan Beecher (3:15)
It seems insane.
Dan McClellan (3:17)
Yeah.
Dan Beecher (3:19)
But we got a show to do, AC or no, so we're gonna dive right in and talk about it. The first thing we're gonna do is a chapter and verse, and it's actually just a few chapters.
Dan McClellan (3:30)
Just a book.
Dan Beecher (3:31)
We're gonna do a book, and that's the book of the Epistle of James. And I am excited to talk about it, because I read it and I like it.
Dan McClellan (3:42)
Yeah, it's a good one.
Dan Beecher (3:43)
So there we go. We're actually doing one that like, we're not gonna tear it apart, we're not gonna be mean about it.
Dan McClellan (3:48)
Oh, we're gonna tear it apart, but we might not be as mean about it. We'll see. We'll see.
Dan Beecher (3:54)
We'll see. We'll get to some stuff that's mostly, it's great. And then we're gonna get Monstrous. It's, I don't even know what we're, we didn't discuss what our segment title is gonna be, but maybe we'll call it What's That, or Let's Get Topical, or I don't know.
We're not taking issue. It's Monsters.
Dan McClellan (4:21)
Yeah, we're gonna talk about three specific monsters, at least. That's how many I planned on it.
I don't know if you came up with more, but.
Dan Beecher (4:29)
Well, no, I just went with the ones that you told me. So, so we're we're good. But yes, if you want to talk about Leviathan, Behemoth and Rahab, no, not that one.
Then we will then we'll get to that in the second half of the show. But for now, chapter and verse.
