You're listening to the Native Plants Healthy Planet podcast presented by Pine Lands Nursery. Here are your hosts, Fran Chismar and Tom Knezick.

Fran Chismar (1:02)

Welcome back to the Native Plants Healthy Planet podcast presented by Pine Lands Nursery. I am Fran Chismar.

Tom Knezick (1:07)

And I'm Tom Knezick and this is episode 333 Is there any symbolism to that? I was looking up area codes. I don't see. So, not assigned is easily recognizable. Held in reserve for potential non-geographic assignment, meaning it's not tied to any city, state or country. We do that sometimes where we talk about, it's been a while since I've talked about area codes.

But no, we have a really cool guest today, one that was suggested by a listener.

Fran Chismar (1:36)

And I actually have a ques- all right.

So, we're in the same category on Apple podcasts. We're in Nature. You always ahead of us. We're kind of looking up. But we've noticed that for Nature, there's always about 6 to 10 podcasts above us that are Bigfoot. So, we're curious of- on your Bigfoot take before we introduce you, what your feelings on Bigfoot are. Are you a believer? Are you-

what are your thoughts?

Willow Defebaugh (2:10)

I don't think I've ever been asked this question in my life and I'm obsessed.

You know, my belief about most things are that anything is possible, particularly in the realm of Nature. So, you know what? I'm not going to go either way on this one. All right. Awesome.

Fran Chismar (2:29)

Have we?

I guess I have complained. I can't say I haven't complained about it because I have. But it's just interesting how many high-rated podcasts there are about Bigfoot. I feel like we're missing-

Tom Knezick (2:41)

Fran gets very upset about how many Bigfoot podcasts there are that take up the Nature category. He feels they're not legitimate. And also, I guess-

SPEAKER_1 (2:51)

Not that they're not legitimate.

Fran Chismar (2:53)

They're a legitimate podcast. I just feel like maybe they should have their own category.

Tom Knezick (2:57)

Nature thing, one.

Willow Defebaugh (2:59)

There should be a separate Bigfoot category for podcasts. People love a conspiracy.

Fran Chismar (3:07)

That's so true. Yeah.

Tom Knezick (3:08)

And I think that's part two is that, how are there so many? It's just shocking that there's so many podcasts about Bigfoot that are high in charts.

When we talk about Native Plants, there's really not a whole lot of podcasts that talk about Native Plants.

Fran Chismar (3:24)

No, there's not.

Tom Knezick (3:25)

So, yeah. But yeah, people love a conspiracy. That's a great way to put it. But now that you've heard from our guest, Willow, would you like to introduce yourself to our listeners?

Willow Defebaugh (3:35)

Sure. So, my name is Willow Defebaugh. I'm the co-founder and editor-in-chief of a magazine called Atmos. We are a publication that seeks to re-enchant people with nature.

And we do so through really combining the creative arts with the rigor of science, and try to provide people with proof of wonder, because we think that this planet is a wondrous place. And we believe that wonder is a very powerful motivator in getting people to change their behavior and act on behalf of life, and maybe even more so than scaring them into doing so.

Fran Chismar (4:18)

Which is, I think, such a generous and giving take for—not take—how to put your foot forward. Like, it should be—like, you should be able to explore every essence or angle of any conversation, and anything should be possible, which I get that sense of wonder when you are a successful podcaster. The Nature Of is a fantastic podcast. You're an author. The Overview Meditations on Nature for a World in Transition. You know, and I really get that sense of hope and wonder, which is the way it should be. I feel kind of—as soon as you think you know everything, then you don't know anything.
