Evan Bayh was born in 1955 and grew up largely in Shirkieville, Indiana, the son of Senator Birch Bayh and grandson of basketball coach Birch Bayh Sr. He attended St. Albans School in Washington, earned a business degree at Indiana University Bloomington and a law degree at the University of...

Picture a historical what if for a second. We are gonna just rewind the clock back to the summer of 2008
SPEAKER_2 (0:07)
Oh, a huge year.
SPEAKER_1 (0:09)
Right? So Barack Obama is on the verge of claiming the Democratic nomination for president, and he needs a running mate.
SPEAKER_2 (0:16)
Which is obviously a massive decision.
SPEAKER_1 (0:18)
Exactly. And history tells us he picked Joe Biden, right? A choice that basically shaped the next couple of decades of American politics.
But I want you to imagine a scenario where Joe Biden was never vice president.
SPEAKER_2 (0:31)
Okay, that is wild to think about.
SPEAKER_1 (0:33)
Yeah, right?
Instead, the person standing next to Barack Obama, like waving to the crowds, was a politician from Indiana. A guy who at one point was considered completely unbeatable in his home state.
SPEAKER_2 (0:46)
It's one of those massive historical sliding doors, honestly. I mean, the entire trajectory of recent American political history could have pivoted on that one single choice.
SPEAKER_1 (0:56)
Today, we are going to look at the man who was standing right on the other side of that sliding door, Evan Bayh. Because his trajectory is a mystery that requires some serious investigation.
SPEAKER_2 (1:07)
It really does.
SPEAKER_1 (1:08)
You have this political prodigy, a guy who becomes the nation's youngest governor, then a wildly popular senator, then a near-VP pick. And then at the absolute height of his power, he just walks away.
SPEAKER_2 (1:19)
Just completely walks away.
SPEAKER_1 (1:21)
Right? Only to attempt to come back a few years later and face a shocking defeat.
So, to figure out how a political titan loses his grip, we have to look at how he built it in the first place. Okay. Let's unpack this. Where does the Evan Bayh blueprint actually begin?
SPEAKER_2 (1:36)
Well, the blueprint really begins with his name. He was born Birch Evans Bayh III in 1955, and he grew up largely in Shirkyville, Indiana.
SPEAKER_1 (1:45)
Okay.
SPEAKER_2 (1:45)
And it is just impossible to analyze his career without understanding the sheer gravity of that name in the Midwest. His father, Birch Bayh, served as a United States Senator from Indiana for nearly two decades.
SPEAKER_1 (1:57)
Wow. Two decades. Yeah.
SPEAKER_2 (1:59)
And his grandfather, Birch Bayh Sr, was a well-known basketball coach. And if you know anything about Indiana, I mean, politics and basketball are basically the two dominant religions there.
SPEAKER_1 (2:08)
Right.
SPEAKER_2 (2:09)
Yeah. So Bayh was essentially royalty in both.
SPEAKER_1 (2:12)
But, you know, relying on a family legacy, that's a double-edged sword, right?
SPEAKER_2 (2:16)
Oh, absolutely.
SPEAKER_1 (2:17)
Because it gets your foot in the door, sure. But the expectations are just crushing. People are out there comparing your first day on the job to your dad's 20-year highlight reel.
SPEAKER_2 (2:27)
He completely understood that, though, which is why he systematically built this elite resume to back up the name. He wasn't just, you know, relying on local goodwill.
SPEAKER_1 (2:35)
He put in the work.
SPEAKER_2 (2:36)
He really did. He attended St. Albans School in Washington, DC., which is an incredibly prestigious prep school. Then he went to Indiana University Bloomington for a business degree and followed that up with a law degree from the University of Virginia.
SPEAKER_1 (2:49)
Not a bad lineup.
SPEAKER_2 (2:51)
Right? He even clerked for a US district judge, James Noland.
SPEAKER_1 (2:55)
So he's treating his early 20s like he's assembling like political armor. He's gathering the degrees, the network, the clerkships.
And by 1986, he finally puts that armor to the test.
SPEAKER_2 (3:07)
Yeah. His first big run.
SPEAKER_1 (3:09)
Exactly. He runs for Indiana Secretary of State.
SPEAKER_2 (3:13)
And we immediately see the mechanics of Indiana politics test him right back. The Republicans challenged his candidacy right out of the gate.
SPEAKER_1 (3:20)
Oh, really? On what grounds?
SPEAKER_2 (3:21)
Well, they argued he didn't even meet the state's five-year residency requirement to be on the ballot. They claimed his time in DC and Virginia basically disqualified him.
Huh.
SPEAKER_1 (3:30)
Keep that residency issue in the back of your mind, by the way. Because it becomes incredibly relevant decades later.
But spoiler alert, he survives that legal challenge.
SPEAKER_2 (3:40)
He does.
SPEAKER_1 (3:41)
And he wins the election with 53 percent of the vote.
And this is where the timeline accelerates in a way you just rarely see in modern politics. Because he serves as secretary of state for basically a minute.
SPEAKER_2 (3:54)
Yeah, just a blip.
SPEAKER_1 (3:55)
Right. Because two years later in 1988, he decides to run for governor.
SPEAKER_2 (3:59)
And he didn't take the easy route either. First, he beats a former mayor, Steve Daley, in the Democratic primary. Then he goes up against the incumbent Republican Lieutenant Governor John Mutz in the general election.
