If you're an entrepreneur, and this is a hot take, oftentimes your endeavors are going to give you the highest return on investment. Then another big mistake I see, they retire and they don't know how to enjoy their wealth.

From his kitchen table in 2010 to offices nationwide, attorney Rod Yancy built oath to protect families beyond the wealthiest 1%. What do you think that we spend our whole lives chasing, but turns out not to matter?
Rod Yancy (0:30)
I work in estate planning. When your time comes, whenever you're on your deathbed, you won't want to see.
Daniel (0:42)
So Rod, I want you to tell me how you learn this the hard way. Resist what's true and it only gets louder.
Rod Yancy (0:50)
That's a good question. So how do I learn it the hard way? Well, all the way back at the very beginning. As a kid, I think we all have that certain knowing that we are meant for something. Whatever it is, maybe it's whatever dream you think that you're put on this earth to pursue. I think fear creeps in and then we start resisting that truth. Before you know it, you're living somebody else's life, you're going to college when you never really felt like you should, or you're getting that business major when what your heart really wants is something completely different, or you go to law school by accident and then you realize you're an entrepreneur.
That's how I learned it, is just living life.
Daniel (1:50)
Tell me about the trip to India and why that changed your life.
Rod Yancy (1:54)
All right, fast forward to a few years ago. This is another resisting thing. Just jump right into it.
Do you know what synchronicities are?
Daniel (2:04)
Tell me.
Rod Yancy (2:05)
Okay. Synchronicity is a profound coincidence. When something happens that makes you think maybe it's an effect, of a cause that you can't put your finger on. A classic case would be you're thinking of a friend, and then you look down at your phone, and this is a friend you haven't talked to, say in five or 10 years, and you look down at your phone and then there's a text from your friend or in some cases, it's you keep seeing numbers again and again and again, and when you see those numbers, it's like time sort of stops. It's a deja vu moment. So that started to happen to me.
I was a licensed attorney, financial advisor, had very much lived my life based on evidence, based on reason, right? What's rational.
If I couldn't explain it logically, then I didn't believe it. And then I suddenly started seeing, for me it was 11-11, right? It's kind of cliche. Now I recognize this cliche. But I was like, what is going on? I started to think I was almost going crazy. And I had a certain deja vu moment. And yeah, it happened to me. I get a text at 11-11 from a friend who I hadn't seen in about 10 years. He was in town, invites me to dinner. And it just goes on and on and on. And I kept resisting that. And I ended up in India eventually after about three years of resisting after having like chopped off the tip of my finger.
And then once I got there, I started to really change the way I approached life and change the way I approached business. When I had in the past been using like intellectualism or like my brain to solve problems, or at least explain the explanation for the solution. You know, after going to India and kind of embracing synchronicities, I started to recognize that there's a knowing, I think the best word for it is intuition. Well, a lot of our best decisions in life, a lot of our best decisions in business, a lot of our best decisions in relationships are not things that we think through. They're things that we know. And then we oftentimes use our intellectual, our logical brain to explain why it's the right decision to make. And so once I recognized that and got more aware of it for myself, business really started to flourish for me. So things started to grow much faster, new opportunities I never would have seen started to emerge just because my focus had gone from being very narrow to being much broader and much more open.
Daniel (5:34)
Do you think that this has something to do with the subconscious mind? We only use a very small percentage of our brain that we know about, but maybe we can actually tap into other parts of the brain that we don't even know about yet?
