Spilled Milk

September 10, 2026

Welcome to our annual Pledge Drive Episode where Memory Lane meets Whatcha Snackin'! We pull no shots as we eat like kings and horse girls while dutifully recounting our culinary intake during a typical week in June.

I'm Molly and I'm Matthew. And this is Spilled Milk, the show where we cook something delicious, eat it all, and you can't have any.

Matthew Amster-Burton (0:11)

And today we're talking Food Diary 2

Molly Wizenberg (0:14)

Oh yeah. And it's also our Pledge Drive episode. Yeah.

Matthew Amster-Burton (0:18)

You look forward to it all year long, the time when you can give us money.

Molly Wizenberg (0:23)

That's right.

Matthew Amster-Burton (0:25)

We'll tell you a little more about that midway through our week of food memories.

Molly Wizenberg (0:29)

So as you may recall, we first did a Food Diary episode. It aired last December.

Matthew Amster-Burton (0:37)

Oh, okay.

Molly Wizenberg (0:38)

So not even that long ago. Not that long ago. It was episode 727

And we wanted to do it again because, number one, it was kind of interesting. Only kind of.

Matthew Amster-Burton (0:49)

Just kind of interesting. I thought it was fun.

Molly Wizenberg (0:51)

And number two, we recorded that one in September of 2025, even though it didn't air for three months. So, it was very specific to what we were eating around then. And this one, which we are recording also three months ahead of time, we're recording this one in June of 2026

We're eating very June things. Yeah.

Matthew Amster-Burton (1:14)

The other reason we're returning to the idea so soon is because we are out of ideas.

Molly Wizenberg (1:18)

No, we're not. Never.

Matthew Amster-Burton (1:20)

There's always something new in the world of food. We just don't know what it is yet.

Molly Wizenberg (1:24)

That's right. So, let us know if you know.

reddit.com/r/everything is Spilled Milk.

Matthew Amster-Burton (1:30)

Okay. So, I think this whole episode is Memory Lane because we're remembering things we ate earlier this week.

Molly Wizenberg (1:36)

That's right. So, I kept my food diary from June 22nd to June 27th of 2026

Matthew Amster-Burton (1:43)

I did mine from June 23rd to June 28th.

Molly Wizenberg (1:48)

Okay.

So, one thing I can say about mine is that my breakfasts are almost always the same. My espresso machine, which I was recently excited about, Brandon actually bought it like 15 years ago for me. And I was briefly into making espresso, but I was really...

Matthew Amster-Burton (2:07)

Fsots B?

Molly Wizenberg (2:09)

Former spouse of the show, Brandon. Okay. Yeah. But, you know, I was trying to pull like the perfect shot.

Matthew Amster-Burton (2:15)

Oh, yeah.

Molly Wizenberg (2:15)

And that will just kill one's spirit.

Matthew Amster-Burton (2:19)

Well, I mean, I imagine it takes a lot of practice. I've never pulled any shot.

Molly Wizenberg (2:23)

It takes a lot of practice, and it's really hard to be practicing something before you've had your coffee in the... Yeah, no, it seems like you should... When the thing you're practicing is your coffee, it's tough. Yeah.

So anyway, I gave up on this espresso machine sometime before Brandon and I split up, and I put it in the closet. I almost got rid of it. Do you remember this story?

Matthew Amster-Burton (2:44)

I, yeah, like I had the timeline all wrong in my head. But yeah, go ahead.

Molly Wizenberg (2:48)

So I put it in the closet for like a decade, and I'm so glad I didn't get rid of it because Silas, my older kid, expressed an interest in learning how to use it. So anyway, I pulled it out. Of course, by then, it needed some repairs and things.

Matthew Amster-Burton (3:04)

Anyway, probably had to de-gunk it like on one of those commercials where they shoot all the gunk out of your ducts.

Molly Wizenberg (3:11)

Probably something like that. Anyway, so the way that I brew my coffee now is I make an Americano using this espresso machine, which is a Pasquini Livia 90

Matthew Amster-Burton (3:24)

Pasquini.

Molly Wizenberg (3:26)

Pasquini.

It's a machine that's like, oh my god, it's probably 35 to 40 years old. Pulls a great shot and it makes me so happy. And most of the time, I just add a little bit of water. And I call it a very short Americano. And I usually have two of those each morning.

Matthew Amster-Burton (3:45)

And that's your breakfast?

Molly Wizenberg (3:46)

No, sorry, that's just my coffee.

Matthew Amster-Burton (3:48)

Oh, okay.

Molly Wizenberg (3:48)

Okay, then for breakfast, I had homemade granola, which I know we've discussed many times on this show.

Matthew Amster-Burton (3:53)

If we had done like a pool, we should have done like some predictions of like what was gonna be on the other person's food diary. Homemade granola would have been at the top of my predictions.
