Episode 572: Behind The Science of Therapeutic Laughter

Habits and Hustle

July 17, 2026

What if laughing every day is less of a personality trait and more of a health strategy? We spend so much time chasing the perfect wellness routine. The supplements, the trackers, the saunas, the cold plunges, the red light, the protocols.

Hi, guys, it's Tony Robbins. You're listening to Habits and Hustle.

**Jen Cohen** (0:04)
Crush it.
Before we get into today's episode, I want to take a moment to talk about something that changed how I think about skincare, and that's peak. Because here's what nobody tells you. You can spend a fortune on serums and creams and still look tired. And then you start to actually wonder, maybe your skin is just done. But the real reason is that your cells are dehydrated and inflamed underneath. So nothing you put on top is actually going to fix it. You're just treating the surface when the problem is way deeper. And that's why I love Peak's Radiant Skin Duo. You take the sun goddess matcha in the morning to detox, calm inflammation and turn your glow back on from the inside. And then their BT Fountain Beauty electrolytes throughout the day. This is luxury hydration with shermicides and hyaluronic acid that actually repairs your skin barrier at the cellular level. So your skin just drinks it up. They both come in these sachets making it super simple to add into your daily routine and just add it into your water. They taste great and you know exactly the right amount every time. There's no measuring, no thinking about it. And for someone who's running around all the time, that's a lot. So I'm telling you, it is fantastic. Right now, Peak is offering 20% off for life plus free gifts. So you have to go to www.peaklife.com/jennifersd to grab the radiant skin duo.
The link is in the show notes. But once again, to get 20% off, you must go to www.piquelife.com/jennifersd to grab the radiant skin duo now.
Hello, and welcome back to Habits and Hustle Solo Edition, where we talk and explore a variety of different topics that are in the zeitgeist, that have interest to me and to hopefully you guys as well. And today's topic is the science of laughter, why we laugh and how it affects our brains and our physical and mental health. I don't know about you, Shawnee, but I'm like a huge fan of comedy, of laughing. That's like literally my favorite thing in the world to do.

**SPEAKER_1** (2:35)
I love a good laugh, I love a belly laugh.

**Jen Cohen** (2:37)
Right?

**SPEAKER_1** (2:37)
Yes.

**Jen Cohen** (2:38)
And I think there is a reason why they say laughter is the best medicine, because it really is. I mean, nothing changes a mood or changes your emotional state better than a good hearty laugh.

**SPEAKER_1** (2:53)
Absolutely.

**Jen Cohen** (2:54)
Right?

**SPEAKER_1** (2:54)
Oh my God, yeah.

**Jen Cohen** (2:55)
I just love it. So that's why I love stand up. So let's go into this a little bit more. You know, like there is a lot of research backing how laughter really does like change, not just the neuroplasticity in our brains, but our overall physical and emotional well-being. That's why there's like a laughter therapy. There's like laughing yoga or whatever they call it.

**SPEAKER_1** (3:17)
Yeah, laughing yoga.

**Jen Cohen** (3:18)
Laughing yoga.

**SPEAKER_1** (3:18)
It's my favorite thing.

**Jen Cohen** (3:19)
Have you actually done it?

**SPEAKER_1** (3:20)
Yeah, I can't believe you've never done it. It's like so much fun.

**Jen Cohen** (3:22)
Yeah, I've never done laughing yoga.

**SPEAKER_1** (3:24)
So much fun.

**Jen Cohen** (3:25)
I just like going, that's why like, you know, I'm like hugely obsessed with stand up comedians and like watching stand up. I can do that every single night of the week. It's just to me, I just love it.

**SPEAKER_1** (3:34)
Yeah, comedians are great.

**Jen Cohen** (3:36)
Comedians, like, you know, every night I fall asleep to like watching some kind of Netflix comedy special.

**SPEAKER_1** (3:41)
But even the recent ones?

**Jen Cohen** (3:43)
Listen, the recent ones haven't been so great, I gotta be honest with you, but like it automatically changes my, if I'm like in a shitty mood, a sad mood, an angry mood, watching five minutes of comedy just shifts everything.

**SPEAKER_1** (3:57)
Yeah.

**Jen Cohen** (3:57)
So, this is why I think this is like a really good topic to really get into, because there's like, they can say gratitude, they could say meditation, they can say every other thing helps you with your mental health and like well-being. I believe laughter is number one.

**SPEAKER_1** (4:16)
Well, laughing yoga is so interesting because it's not actual, like you're not laughing because you're watching like a really hilarious stand up bit. It's a forced laughter at first. You're all like, I did this at the beach and look at a beach like my whole family was there on vacation and this circle of what looked like a cult just pulled us into their little laughing circle. And you just laugh and instinctually like once everyone else starts laughing, you start laughing and then everyone's just laughing a lot. And then you're just like laughing nonstop. And then it's just this crazy like bout of laughter that is just so uncontrollable. And it's so it's one of my favorite things. It's so much fun.
