Bury deep inside the human skull, just behind the ear, is a wedge of bone shaped like a small pyramid. Anatomists call it the Petrus pyramid. It's the densest bone in the body, denser than even a femur, and its job is to protect the delicate structure of the inner ear. Nature built it like a vault, and when geneticists began searching ancient skeletons for DNA, they discovered just how effective that vault could be. In bones where time and decay had destroyed almost everything else, the Petrus pyramid could still preserve remarkably high concentrations of genetic material, even after a fire. In 2024, this fact would become enormously important in a quiet stretch of rural Dodge County, Wisconsin, where a 37-year-old mother was preparing to start over. Crystal Rasch had filed for divorce, found a new apartment and was moving her belongings out box by box toward a life that finally seemed to belong to her. And then, just as that life was supposed to begin, she vanished. But before anyone even understood that Crystal was gone, somebody was already taking extraordinary steps to make sure she'd never be found.

Join me now, as we dive in to the disappearance of Crystal Rasch, a case that began with a woman seemingly walking away from her life. You'll hear how her stepmother refused to believe she'd simply walked away, pushing a reluctant sheriff's office to look deeper, and how a trail of financial breadcrumbs led investigators to discover Crystal's debit card was still being used after her disappearance.

In June of 2024, Heather Doherty was raising four children in Wisconsin who'd been in her care for nearly five years. That summer, she was preparing to adopt them, but there was uncertainty in that plan because the children's biological mother, 37-year-old Crystal Rasch, hoped she might regain custody one day.

Heather Doherty (3:29)

Crystal was amazing with her children. She was lower functioning, so she needed extra guidance and support along the way, but she loved her children very much.

Tyler Allen (3:46)

The children had been placed in foster care in 2019, after repeated incidents of domestic conflict between Crystal and her husband, Zachariah Rasch. There had been abuse allegations and restraining orders, and ultimately, the children were removed from the home.

But once they were in foster care, Crystal kept showing up for her children whenever she was allowed. But not Zachariah, according to Heather, he never spoke to the children again.

Heather Doherty (4:17)

I made it very clear to Crystal that I knew the importance of their relationship, and as long as it remained healthy and safe, that she would be able to continue to be a part of their lives.

Tyler Allen (4:31)

Crystal's contact with the children became remarkably consistent.

Heather Doherty (4:35)

Regular phone calls, and she had visits every Monday.

Tyler Allen (4:40)

By the beginning of 2024, Crystal had filed for divorce from Zachariah and hoped that ending the marriage might improve her chances of regaining custody.

Heather Doherty (4:51)

She was hoping that once Zach's rights were terminated, she would get the kids back.

She was making plans on if that didn't happen, what our relationship would look like and what her relationship would look like with the children after adoption. She was optimistic. She was hoping that she convinced everyone that she left Zach for good, and that she checked all of the boxes that the state required her to do. She knew that she was still going to be able to maintain a relationship with their children either way.

Tyler Allen (5:31)

Because Crystal's visits were supervised, she and Heather communicated regularly to arrange them. But on June 10th, Crystal did something unusual.

She canceled.

Heather Doherty (5:44)

Crystal had texted me saying that she had strep throat and that she did not want to get the kids sick and that she would be canceling the visit. I said, okay, I hope you feel better. And then I sent her a picture, a couple pictures of her son's kindergarten graduation.

Usually when I send a picture of her kid, she follows back with a thank you and five or six text messages asking about more details about her kid and what they were doing and when it was and if they had fun. So it was very odd that she did not respond after that.
