I can say to my new Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra, hey, find a keto-friendly restaurant nearby and text it to Beth and Steve. And it does without me lifting a finger, so I can get in more squats anywhere I can. One, two, three.

Dan Beecher (0:14)

Will that be cash or credit?

SPEAKER_1 (0:16)

Credit, four.

Dan McClellan (1:01)

This is one of the imprisonments of Paul.

Dan Beecher (1:03)

He's a career criminal, is what he is.

Dan McClellan (1:05)

Yeah, yeah. I think there were 30, 34 felonies that he was convicted of.

SPEAKER_4 (1:10)

No, no, no.

Dan Beecher (1:11)

That's somebody else. I think you're thinking of someone else.

Dan McClellan (1:18)

Hey, everybody. I'm Dan McClellan.

Dan Beecher (1:19)

And I'm Dan Beecher.

Dan McClellan (1:21)

And you're listening to the Data Over Dogma podcast, where we increase public access to the academic study of the Bible and religion, and combat the spread of misinformation about the same. How are things today, Dan?

Dan Beecher (1:33)

It's a good day. It's a good day for some some expounding on on on biblicality, biblical ality.

Dan McClellan (1:42)

Yes.

Dan Beecher (1:43)

Yes.

Dan McClellan (1:43)

And it's going to get into some expositional weeds here on something to get into some weird stuff, man.

Dan Beecher (1:51)

I mean, the first. So our first thing we're going to do a chapter in verse, and we're going to cover the entire book of Philemon, which does not take long. It turns out it is. It's one of those blessed short ones that are scattered hither and thither throughout the holy text.

Dan McClellan (2:13)

Or hither and yon, if you're nasty. Yeah. Only 335 words in Greek, the whole book.

Dan Beecher (2:20)

Oh, okay.

Dan McClellan (2:21)

Which sounds like a lot, and that resolves to 25 verses. So, yeah, not going to take long to get through. But some interesting stuff in there.

SPEAKER_7 (2:29)

Yeah, I can't wait to have you explore it with me, because I am...

Dan Beecher (3:05)

Oh, 70th?

All right. Oh, yeah, Septuagenarian. All right, fine, it's the 70th. The translation of the 70, as it is known.

Dan McClellan (3:16)

And we'll talk about the tradition that is the reason that it's called the Septuagint.

Dan Beecher (3:23)

Okay, yes.

Dan McClellan (3:24)

And why you're probably using it wrong, but also, it doesn't matter.

Dan Beecher (3:28)

I guarantee I'm using it wrong. I literally just used it wrong.

Dan McClellan (3:32)

Well, not you, you. I'm talking to the audience, if there is still an audience.

Dan Beecher (3:37)

Oh, they're out there. You guys are out there, right? Hello? Are you there? So let's just dive in with chapter and verse. And for chapter and verse, here it is. We said it, it's Philemon. I like that on the Bible website that I'm looking at with the NRSVUE. It's listed as Philemon 1

Dan McClellan (4:03)

Philemon 1

Dan Beecher (4:05)

I don't know that there's more than one.

Dan McClellan (4:07)

New York zero.

Dan Beecher (4:11)

Anyway, yeah, it's just the one book and the one chapter in the one book.

Dan McClellan (4:19)

That's a problem.

Dan Beecher (4:21)

And here's the thing. It starts out and it's a Pauline epistle. Is that correct?

Dan McClellan (4:27)

It is Pauline. It is indisputed.

That is to say that there are no scholars who believe this is pseudonymous, that believe someone other than Paul wrote it. Everyone, pretty much everyone, I'm sure there's somebody out there, but everyone who has ever published on it agrees this is Pauline. I might. Wait, wait, wait. No, no, I can think of somebody who has challenged its authenticity, but that is actually a rather new publication.

Dan Beecher (4:57)

So we'll see how that goes, how the how the the the rest of Academia comes crashing down on them. I'm going to say and we'll get to it later on, but I am suspicious that this isn't actually Paul, but we'll get to why later on.
