**SPEAKER_1** (0:23)
Hey, team! Welcome back to the movies.
We're record-breaking weekend, featuring Spiderman.
**SPEAKER_2** (0:35)
What's happening, Hoops?
**Scott** (0:37)
Big weekend.
**SPEAKER_1** (0:38)
Very big weekend. Spiderman, presumably, or not presumably, let me find here.
**Scott** (0:44)
I mean, we might find out momentarily.
**SPEAKER_1** (0:46)
Are we waiting for some figures to come in?
**Scott** (0:49)
We're probably going to be breaking news during this podcast.
**SPEAKER_1** (0:51)
It made more than 2 mil, I'm hearing. Yeah, it's definitely more than 2 mil. It had, here it is, it had the biggest single day of all time, with 168 mil.
**Scott** (1:01)
In one day.
**SPEAKER_1** (1:02)
One day.
**Scott** (1:03)
That's like all of Moana's gross.
**SPEAKER_1** (1:06)
Actually, when I was seeing this movie the other day, I, just for a laugh, looked at the tickets for Moana in the next theater. Two seats taken.
Lot of empty space to sing and dance.
**SPEAKER_4** (1:20)
What can I say?
**SPEAKER_5** (1:22)
But you're welcome.
**SPEAKER_2** (1:25)
Big stupid oaf with a bunch of fake flowers floating around in the sky and a stupid fucking mocap bodysuit.
**SPEAKER_1** (1:33)
Dwayne, we love you.
**SPEAKER_2** (1:34)
Get him out of here. It's gonna sink his career.
**SPEAKER_1** (1:37)
Spiderman, it might even make more money than Black Adam made a couple of years ago.
**SPEAKER_2** (1:42)
It's about drive.
**SPEAKER_4** (1:42)
It's about...
**SPEAKER_1** (1:44)
I forgot about that song. Holy shit.
**SPEAKER_2** (1:46)
So embarrassing.
**SPEAKER_1** (1:47)
But it's funny that superhero movies are dead unless you're Spiderman. People love Spiderman. They're coming out in droves. My theater is packed. Scott, your theater?
**Scott** (1:57)
Yeah, packed.
**SPEAKER_1** (1:58)
I mean, I saw there was a Spiderman in Cosplay. I actually saw him at the Boston Theater when I went to see The Odyssey for the second time the other day.
But people in Cosplay, I don't see that a lot.
**Scott** (2:11)
So I actually tried to go see Spiderman with somebody last night, and I've got three big theaters near me. I've got one in Bellingham, one in North Attleboro, one in Foxboro. Hour, two hours before the show, we couldn't find tickets.
It's playing on every screen.
**SPEAKER_1** (2:27)
I very rarely, if ever, have trouble getting tickets. I don't see sold out in the AMC app a lot, but I saw it quite a bit this past week.
This movie is bringing people out of their homes for the first time in years, it's seemingly.
**SPEAKER_2** (2:43)
I don't understand the phenomena. We were discussing this off air, that all of the Spider-Man movies have done pretty well, and I don't understand why this one is so humongous.
**SPEAKER_1** (2:54)
It's heading towards the second biggest opening weekend of all time. Also possibly the first biggest opening weekend of all time.
**Scott** (3:01)
Yeah, it might be the Avengers Endgame.
**SPEAKER_1** (3:02)
A lot of people say movies cost more nowadays. There's the inflation and also IMAX ticket prices, but you were saying this movie didn't come out in IMAX, although IMAX theaters are still being...
**Scott** (3:15)
They're still sold out.
**SPEAKER_1** (3:16)
Showing the Odyssey. Yeah.
**Scott** (3:17)
It's doing this gross without IMAX.
**SPEAKER_1** (3:21)
It's impressive.
**Scott** (3:21)
It's very impressive.
**SPEAKER_2** (3:24)
As a big movie buff, I would say movies selling and keeping the theaters packed with people, regardless of what the movie is, is wonderful. But the Odyssey is cool and all, but it feels to me like these types of gigantic tentpole, in particular superhero releases, are just going to make independent movies kind of vanish, unless they're in that horror kind of obsession back room space.
**Scott** (3:50)
I disagree, because I think earlier this summer proved that to be the opposite.
**SPEAKER_2** (3:53)
With what movie, though?
**Scott** (3:54)
With Backrooms and Obsessions.
**SPEAKER_2** (3:56)
That's what I'm saying. That's the one niche left, is the little indie horror movie.
**Scott** (4:00)
Yeah, because they can do horror for cheap. You just don't need names.
**SPEAKER_1** (4:03)
Yeah, horror is like box office proof.
**SPEAKER_2** (4:06)
You can do low budget.
**SPEAKER_1** (4:07)
All these ups and downs, like superhero movies have been having, horror movies, if it's good, they still make a fortune.
**Scott** (4:14)
There's no low budget indie superhero movie.
**SPEAKER_1** (4:17)
That's true.
**Scott** (4:18)
That doesn't exist.
**SPEAKER_2** (4:19)
I feel like dramas just do nothing now. Nobody's going.
**Scott** (4:22)
Yeah, I think they're just reserved for streaming.
**SPEAKER_2** (4:26)
They're pretty much just set up for awards season.
**SPEAKER_1** (4:28)
It's what happens in rom-coms. Flat out dramas, like movie just about people, like a Manchester by the Sea type drama.
**Scott** (4:35)
But rom-coms used to be pretty steady box office, but they don't exist anymore.
