My concern isn't the long run, it's the next three to seven years. How do we head towards Star Trek and not Terminator?
Elon Musk (0:07)
I call AI and robotics the supersonic tsunami. We're in the singularity.
Peter Diamandis (0:12)
When is all white collar work gone?
Elon Musk (0:14)
Anything short of shaping atoms, AI can do half or more of those jobs right now.
Peter Diamandis (0:20)
There's no on-off switch. It is coming and accelerating.
Elon Musk (0:23)
The transition will be bumpy.
Peter Diamandis (0:25)
You have a solution to this.
Elon Musk (0:26)
I don't make a bet here.
Peter Diamandis (0:29)
China has done an incredible job, right? I mean, it's running circles around us. Do you imagine that the US could make that level of investment and commitment?
Elon Musk (0:40)
Based on current trends, China will far exceed the rest of the world in AI compute.
Peter Diamandis (0:46)
Every major CEO and economist and government leader should be like, what do we do?
Dave Blundin (0:51)
We don't have any system right now to make this go well. But AI is a critical part of making it go well.
Elon Musk (0:56)
There are three things that I think are important. Truth will prevent AI from going insane. Curiosity, I think, will foster any form of sentience. And if it has a sense of beauty, it will be a great future.
Peter Diamandis (1:08)
It's going to be an awesome future.
Dave Blundin (1:12)
Now that's the Moonshot, ladies and gentlemen.
Peter Diamandis (1:17)
Welcome to Moonshots. Following is a wide-ranging conversation with Elon Musk, focused on optimism and the coming age of abundance. My Moonshot mate, Dave Blundin, and I flew into Austin, Texas to meet up with Elon at his 11.5 million-square-foot gigafactory, home of the Cybertruck and Model Y production, and the future home for 8 million square feet of optimist production. Elon has agreed to do this kind of a deep dive catch-up once per year. This is hopefully the first of many. And after having this conversation with Elon, it's crystal clear to me that we are living through the singularity. All right, enjoy.
Elon Musk (1:54)
Your relentless optimism is always a breath of fresh air.
Peter Diamandis (1:56)
Thank you, buddy. Thank you. Well, I want to share that tonight with a lot of people. Yeah, I think they need it.
Elon Musk (2:02)
I hope you're right. And you might be right, actually. I'm increasingly thinking that you are right.
SPEAKER_4 (2:06)
Thank you. Abundance for all.
Elon Musk (2:09)
Yeah.
Peter Diamandis (2:10)
That's the goal. Shall we?
SPEAKER_4 (2:11)
Yeah.
Peter Diamandis (2:11)
All right.
Elon Musk (2:13)
Right now, putting a lot of time into chips.
Peter Diamandis (2:16)
You are to be your personal.
Elon Musk (2:17)
Yeah.
Dave Blundin (2:20)
With some AI assistance, I assume.
Peter Diamandis (2:21)
What's that?
Dave Blundin (2:21)
With some AI assistance, I assume. Design.
Elon Musk (2:25)
Not enough. It would be nice if we could just hand it over to the AI.
Dave Blundin (2:30)
Yeah.
Peter Diamandis (2:32)
Soon enough.
Dave Blundin (2:33)
Yeah. I tried to do some circuit design actually with AI recently, just a couple of weeks ago. Not happening yet.
Elon Musk (2:43)
Very soon though. Yeah. I think probably at this point, if you took a photo and submitted to Grok, it can probably tell you if the circuit is somewhere along with it.
Dave Blundin (2:55)
Yeah?
Elon Musk (2:56)
Yeah.
Dave Blundin (2:56)
All right. I'm going to give it a shot. You're using the same Grok that I'm using? Are you?
Elon Musk (3:01)
Grok keeps updating.
Dave Blundin (3:03)
Yeah. 4.2, but 5 is soon, right?
Elon Musk (3:07)
5 is Q1. Yeah. 4.2 has not been released yet externally. But, yeah, I mean, if you just upload an image into Grok, it's just quite a good job of analyzing any given image.
Dave Blundin (3:28)
Absolutely.
Let's start. We're going to talk about this. All right. We'll come back to it.
Elon Musk (3:33)
Let's see if I take a picture of you. What is it? Let's see what it did.
Peter Diamandis (3:36)
Yeah. What's it going to say about me?
Elon Musk (3:38)
Yeah.
Dave Blundin (3:39)
It's going to say you're a flawed circuit.
Elon Musk (3:40)
I also have to remember to update it because we update the Grok app so frequently.
Peter Diamandis (3:43)
You know, I asked Grok to roast me.
Elon Musk (3:46)
It does a good job.
Peter Diamandis (3:47)
It did an amazing job. Then I asked Grok to roast you and I spit out my coffee. It was hilarious. And then I asked it, you know.
