Hello everybody, welcome in to another episode of the Locked On Blue Devils Podcast. My name is JJ Jackson. So great to have you here with us today. On Monday, September 7th, 2026, Locked On Blue Devils is your one-stop shop where we discuss everything going on inside the life of Duke Athletics. Hope everyone is enjoying this long Labor Day weekend. Football season has arrived. Duke is in the win column. They knock off Tulane in the season opener. We'll get to that a little bit later. We bring on Jason Evans from Duke Basketball Roundup, and we've got plenty to discuss as we have been craving some Duke Basketball footage. It is a Labor Day treat for us all. Jason, I hope you're doing well. It's great to see you, my friend.
Jason Evans (2:13)
Yes, thank you so much for having me on. God, we have been... I feel like most summers, we get more peeks at the team. And look, I know that these are fully edited videos. Like someone pointed out, wow, if Duke makes every single shot and then the ones they miss, they get the offensive rebound and put it back every time, this team is going to be tough to beat.
Look, these videos, you can only take so much from them. But yeah, we've been craving some sense of how the team is doing, how they're playing together for a while now. And yeah, this was like finding mana in the desert.
JJ Jackson (2:49)
Yeah. I mean, look, it's great to get all the highlights that we were able to see and we're going to be able to break all this down. Like you said, the offensive rebounds turning into buckets, the turnovers that would have been in the video, the two or three of whatever resulted in breakaway dunks on the other end. So a highlight for that side of the Duke equation there. But at least it's something, like you said, this year we were able to get kind of 60 second freshman introductory highlight clips of them working out and then their get familiar posts of the personality side of the players. Finally, a little footage to look at for this team and man, they're deep.
Jason Evans (3:24)
Well, and I think that there's a, to me, there's a big difference in this kind of video from a scrimmage and the highlights of an individual player. And the difference is, and we'll get into this extensively, look, if the team is playing a five on five, 15 minute scrimmage, which is my understanding that's about what this was, and they take five minutes of highlights, you're going to get a sense of who's the most involved because they're going to appear the most in the video.
Like, I don't think that they were making lots of choices about, oh, let's highlight this guy and downplay that guy. I think that the, for example, I mean, I'll just launch right into it. The fact that we saw Joaquim Boumtje-Boumtje, Jojo, doing so much more than what we saw from Cameron Williams says to me that in a game situation, Jojo is doing more than Cameron Williams. You know, hey, make the big leap there, Jason. But seriously, like, if you were just putting together highlights from a given practice, you can make them look equal. But when you have a scrimmage like this, that's where you begin to see, oh, this guy's more involved in the offense, this guy's doing more and showing us more because he's more part of what the team is doing. If that makes any sense at all.
