Drinking, Gen Z, and Hangovers

The Dave Chang Show

October 15, 2026

Dave makes a classic hangover food, a bacon-egg-and-cheese sandwich, for guests while they talk about drinking. The Gen-Z experience is examined, stories about first drinks in the Amazon with strangers are told, and Dave recounts falling out of a window.

Hey, you know somebody that's Gen Z. Maybe you have a Gen Z. And guess what? They got screwed in a lot of ways by the pandemic. And one of the main things they never learned was how to drink properly.

Today, we're going to fix that.

I'm here with Christopher Yang, producer David, and today we're talking about drinking alcoholic beverages. It's on the downturn or maybe it's not. We're going to do a moif, my opinion is fact, and we're going to invite some guests to the counter for bacon, egg, and cheese sandwiches. One of the great hangover meals.

I believe it saved my life many, many, many a morning. I don't drink nearly as much as I used to, and that's for benefit for everybody.

Chris Ying (2:07)

Except for the spectators who like to watch that, it hurts us. Yeah, it's true.

Dave Chang (2:11)

But growing up, I remember being 13 years old being like, I have to get a fake ID. And I remember turning 14 being like, I have to get drunk. It's true.

And that was pretty much it. I remember smoking my first joint, but really the thing that you wanted as a kid growing up, at least for me, was getting access to alcohol. And yeah, I drank a lot.

Chris Ying (2:41)

13 months and you got a fake ID?

Dave Chang (2:43)

No, 14, excuse me.

SPEAKER_1 (2:44)

Gotta get that right, 14

Chris Ying (2:45)

Is that early?

Dave Chang (2:46)

It is, Delaware. It got taken in Boulder. Fuck you, Boulder.

I got it all the way to like three months before my, no, March of my senior year, spring break.

Chris Ying (2:59)

You had the same thing?

Dave Chang (3:00)

We were in Boulder, Colorado and they took it. And those March to August 5th, my birthday was a painful thing for months.

Chris Ying (3:08)

Was it a real picture of you or was it another Asian? No, it was a picture of me.

Dave Chang (3:12)

Okay. Yeah.

You know, it was like created by one of those younger people you know that were computer geniuses back then.

Chris Ying (3:19)

Yeah.

Dave Chang (3:20)

Yeah.

Chris Ying (3:21)

Is that, is 14-

Dave Chang (3:22)

I think I was born like 1964

Chris Ying (3:25)

This 15-year-old kid. Is that early? Do you think you started drinking early?

Is 14 young?

Dave Chang (3:32)

In Europe, it's early.

Chris Ying (3:33)

Yeah.

Dave Chang (3:33)

I mean, Europe, it's normal.

SPEAKER_5 (3:34)

That's normal. Yeah.

Chris Ying (3:35)

But in America, I mean, I don't think I had my first drink until I was 17

Dave Chang (3:40)

Yeah.

Chris Ying (3:41)

So you were pretty early. That's pretty young, I think.

Dave Chang (3:44)

Yeah. I mean, I got in trouble freshman year. I did.

Chris Ying (3:49)

Were you drinking with older kids?

Dave Chang (3:50)

If I didn't get drunk with somebody that worked at the high school, the kid, I probably would have been kicked out.

Chris Ying (3:56)

Oh, the other kid was-

Dave Chang (3:57)

So if you're gonna get drunk at school, make sure you do it with a-

Chris Ying (4:01)

An administrator's child?

Dave Chang (4:02)

Yes. Yes. It's a great, great get out of jail free card.

No, but college was fun. Get to experiment. And then one thing for certain is, I know cooks don't drink as much. And listen, I'm an investor in athletic brewing. I'm partner mainly because I just don't drink anymore. And it's nice to have something when you're out and about. But it doesn't mean I don't drink. I just don't drink that much. And you finish service and you get your shift drink. And if it wasn't like a cold Gatorade with some candy, all you want was that ice cold beer. And till this day, there's nothing as refreshing as that. And then you go out and drink from, say, one in the morning to 4.3 in the morning. And you talk about shop and you redo it. And then on your day off, you would get really drunk and try to forget about everything.
