Don't be a jerk...off?
Data Over Dogma
July 27, 2026
This week it's a "What's That?" double feature! First, we take on the Great Commission. Does Matthew 28 really command every believer to accost strangers on airplanes and by the baggage carousel, or is "make disciples" a whole lot narrower (and quieter) than the modern evangelists think?

You know, Dan, tis the season to be celebrating these United States of America. And one of the things that I like to celebrate is that classic American entrepreneurial spirit. We can get a little cynical about America sometimes, but there is something amazing about that. And it's one of the reasons that I like supporting Brooklyn Bedding. It's a classic American story. The founder, John, didn't come from some big corporate background. He didn't have a degree, he just studied mattresses, bootstrapped the business, and built his own factory from the ground up in Arizona.
Now, that's the kind of determination and grit that actually is fun to talk about, but it's also resulted in some great mattresses.
Dan McClellan (0:42)
Yeah, my mattress that I got from Brooklyn Bedding is the Plankfirm Luxe. It's a Cal King, as I enjoy pointing out to you repeatedly. But I could tell the difference the first night I've slept on this mattress.
Brooklyn Bedding knows sleep isn't one size fits all. They offer mattresses for every body, every sleep style, even in hard to find sizes. And if you're like me, you sleep hot. They have their Glaciotex covers, copper-infused foams, temperature regulating materials that help keep you cool and comfortable all night long. And they design and assemble every mattress in their Arizona factory. No middlemen, no gimmicks, just top tier quality, honest pricing, and real American craftsmanship for a much better night's sleep.

Introducing Meta Glasses.
SPEAKER_4 (1:52)
You have questions, they've got answers.
SPEAKER_5 (1:55)
Hey Meta, what's the capital of Peru?
SPEAKER_4 (1:58)
Lima. How do you say, where's the restroom in Spanish?
SPEAKER_3 (2:02)
Dónde está el baño?
SPEAKER_4 (2:04)
Hey Meta, is a hot dog a sandwich?
SPEAKER_3 (2:07)
Technically, no. Spiritually, yes.
SPEAKER_6 (2:10)
Hey Meta, what should I do with my life?
SPEAKER_3 (2:13)
That's one of life's biggest questions. What do you think?
SPEAKER_6 (2:17)
Ask anything with the new Meta Glasses.

When you suggested that we would do masturbation on the show, not do masturbation on the show, but rather discuss the concept of masturbation, look for the Data Over Dogma OnlyFans coming soon.
Dan McClellan (2:41)
Hey, everybody. I'm Dan McClellan.
Dan Beecher (2:43)
And I'm Dan Beecher.
Dan McClellan (2:44)
This is Data Over Dogma, where we increase public access to the academic study of the Bible and religion, and we combat the spread of misinformation about the same. How are things today, Dan?
Dan Beecher (2:55)
Things are good.
We got a corker coming up. We got a fireball coming at you with this one today. I think today's show is going to be fun. The first part is what's that? And what we're going to be talking about is the Great Commission. Or is it?
Dan McClellan (3:14)
Is it all that great?
Dan Beecher (3:15)
How great is it? I don't know.
We're going to get to it. We're going to figure out if you should actually be annoying people on planes about Jesus. And then, oh, we're going to get steamy, baby. It's Data After Dark, because we're going to talk about masturbation.
Dan McClellan (3:39)
Yes, not the hows and whys.
Dan Beecher (3:43)
Yeah, this will not be instructional in nature.
Dan McClellan (3:46)
Yes, but we are going to talk about what's going on. Does the Bible have anything to say about this? Does the Bible care?
Dan Beecher (3:54)
I am assured, or at least younger Dan was very much assured, that the Bible had stuff to say about this. So we'll have to get into that in the second half of the show. But first, what's that?
All right, so The Great Commission is what we're talking about. We'll expand on it, but I guess we're starting in Matthew 28, is that right?
Dan McClellan (4:24)
Yes, yes. Here we have The Great Commission is the title that is generally given for it. It's an okay commission, really. I think the earlier work was better. But anyway, this is the very end of the Gospel of Matthew. This is where they tie it all off with a neat little bow. And this happens after the crucifixion of Jesus and the resurrection, verse 16 of Matthew 28 Now the 11 disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain to which Jesus had directed them. When they saw him, they worshiped him, but they doubted.
Interesting little tidbit there, because some translations say, but some doubted. Oh. And others say, but they doubted.
