Hello everybody, welcome back to the show. My guest today is Matt Rudd. He's the Deputy Editor at The Sunday Times Magazine and an author. Men between the ages of 45 and 49 are at the highest risk of attempting to take their own life. In a world filled with accusations of patriarchal overreach, it seems odd that men are suffering so much with their mental health in a world that apparently they created. It's not good for them or their wives or their children. Matt researched men of all ages to work out why men are unhappy and what we can do about it. Expect to learn why your 40s might be the weirdest period of your life, why men would rather be a workaholic than face their internal fears, the challenges of the male denial of mental health, why men feel indulgent shame if they're sad, why boys are trained to be competitive in school, how to tell if you're genuinely getting old and much more.
I really enjoy Matt's very dry, very British way of approaching an incredibly serious topic. The male denial of mental health problems is so pervasive, and no matter how many It's OK to Talk campaigns there are, there's still a lot more work to be done. So I really appreciate the research that he went through for his book and all of the experiments that he did to try and make himself better, and then his learnings and his openness on the other side of that. Also, if you enjoy this episode, make sure that you hit the subscribe button, as it is the only way that you can ensure that you will never miss an episode every Monday, Thursday and Saturday when they are uploaded. In other news, this episode is brought to you by Manscaped. You do not need to use an old face shaver from three Christmases ago to shave your gentleman's area. The Manscaped engineering team obsesses over technology developments to provide you with the best tools for your grooming experience, and they have spent 18 months perfecting the greatest ball and body hair trimmer ever created, the new and improved Lawnmower 4.0. It is the safest and most convenient way to shave your body. It's got a cutting edge ceramic blade to reduce grooming accidents, a 90 minute battery so you can take a longer shave, waterproof technology which allows you to groom in the shower, and an LED light which illuminates grooming areas for a closer and more precise trim, or in case you want to do it in the dark. They've also upgraded to a 7000 RPM motor with quiet stroke technology, so not only are you in the dark but now you're silent as well, like some sort of pubic assassin, it's a word that I've never said before. The Lawnmower 4 even comes with a wireless charging system using electromagnetic induction to help the battery last even longer. plus you can get 20% off everything and free shipping with the code modernwisdom at manscaped.com. In other other news, this episode is brought to you by Lucy. I know some people choose to use nicotine to relax, focus or just unwind after a long day. Lucy is a modern oral nicotine company that makes nicotine gum, lozenges and pouches for adults who are looking for the best, most responsible way to consume their nicotine. It's a new year, so if you are looking to cut back on your consumption, why not switch to a new nicotine product that you can actually feel good about? Also, it comes in all sorts of interesting flavors like cool cider, spear mint and mango with strengths from 4 milligrams all the way up to 8 milligrams. And you know that you are getting exactly the right dosage, so if you're looking to cut back, this is a very precise way to do it. If you are traveling, if you're going on a plane and you can't take a vape or a cigarette with you, this is a great thing to switch from. And if you've been thinking about introducing nicotine as a nootropic to help with creative work, this is the best and cleanest way to do it. Not starting up smoking just so you can become a good writer is probably a pretty good way to go about things. Lucy would be a much better option. So if you enjoy using nicotine, you should definitely check out Lucy's products at lucy.co, that's L-U-C-Y dot C-O, or if you're in the UK, it's uk.lucy.co. And use the promo code M-W-20 at checkout for 20% off everything sitewide. Also, I have to read this disclaimer. Warning, this product contains nicotine. Nicotine is an addictive chemical. So remember, if you're interested in a better way to use nicotine, visit lucy.co and use the code M-W-20 at checkout. And in final news, this episode is brought to you by The Six Minute Diary. Over one and a half million people have used The Six Minute Diary worldwide to help themselves live a happier and more fulfilled life. It's recommended by psychologists and therapists all over the world using the proven principles of positive psychology to help you live your life more consciously and positively. It helps you to focus on progress and the good things in life in easy portions of three minutes in the morning and three minutes in the evening. It helps you to discover what makes you really happy and helps you to bring more of that into your life. It's self-care and mindfulness made easy, turning the leading research into an easy to use daily journal. I've used one for the last five years. There's nine or ten of them sat somewhere in my bedroom. It's important if you've been thinking that you want to get a gratitude practice started, it is the foundation for happiness in life. If you don't have gratitude, it is limiting the upper bound of how much happiness you can get. It really helps to look back on how you've progressed throughout the year. It's the most frictionless way, I think, to actually start doing a gratitude practice. And you can get 15% off everything site-wide by going to bit.ly slash diarywisdom. That's bit.ly slash diarywisdom. And the code MW15 at checkout will get you 15% off everything. Their six-minute diary, their success journal, their kids journal, absolutely everything.
