Did the Bible Steal its Stories?
Data Over Dogma
June 16, 2025
Were the authors of the Bible just writing firsthand accounts of events that actually happened? That's a pretty tough case to make.

So, ever since an injury in 2010, I have suffered from lower back pain, and it makes sleeping awful, particularly if I'm traveling. I spend a lot of time in hotels. They always have mattresses that are too soft for me, particularly if I'm in Europe. But I just got the Brooklyn Bedding California King Extra Firm, and it has been phenomenal. I like a firm mattress. I am a side sleeper. I can't sleep on my stomach anymore. And I wake up without that very familiar lower back pain that I have been suffering with for so many years, thanks to my Brooklyn Bedding mattress. It's been an incredible upgrade from my old mattress.
Dan Beecher (0:37)
See, now I like the luxury of a softer mattress myself. So I got one of Brooklyn Bedding's softer mattresses, and oh, I love it. The pillow top, everything's beautiful. Brooklyn Bedding's been around for over 25 years. They are known for top of the line comfort and quality without the luxury price tag. Brooklyn Bedding really has something for everyone. You've got different firmness options, heights, dimensions, even non-traditional sizes that are right for your lifestyle.

This seems like something that was just appropriated by the psalmist, the worshipers of Adonai, who were like, like the sound of that. Why don't you shove that in your bag real quick?
Dan Beecher (2:12)
Right, right. Let me just cross out the word ball here. We'll just say, Lord, that'll be fine.
Dan McClellan (2:25)
Hey everybody, I'm Dan McClellan.
Dan Beecher (2:26)
And I'm Dan Beecher.
Dan McClellan (2:27)
And you're listening to the Data Over Dogma podcast, where we increase public access to the academic study of the Bible and religion, and we combat the spread of misinformation about the same. How are things today, Dan, apart from feeling like crap?
Dan Beecher (2:43)
I am fighting a cold, which is not fair because the weather is warm. And that's not how that's supposed to go. No, but I'm feeling great. Otherwise, in good spirits, mostly, we just got back from our our tour. Yes, in in in listener time, that was weeks ago. But yes, in our time, we just barely got back.
Dan McClellan (3:05)
Yeah, just a few days ago, I flew back from DC. You you trained on to to New York for an arts gallery.
Dan Beecher (3:14)
Oh, yeah. And then the Met, the Met has an extraordinary John Singer Sargent special collection going right now. Highly recommend it. Very, very good. But yeah, we got to meet all kinds of people. We got met several of the listeners to this very show. And that was what a treat that was.
Dan McClellan (3:34)
It was definitely wonderful to get out on the road to meet some of y'all, to hear your stories, and to get to sign some of these books and enjoy each other's company for a while. It was a great time. So thank you to every single one of y'all who came out to see us and to hear us and in various ways, figurative and literally.
Dan Beecher (3:54)
We're sorry it was terrible, but we had a good time.
Dan McClellan (3:59)
Most of the jokes landed, and if they didn't, we just moved right on ahead.
Dan Beecher (4:03)
Right, right. Absolutely. Yeah, so we should probably do a show, I'm thinking.
Dan McClellan (4:09)
I guess if we must.
Dan Beecher (4:12)
If we want to have a show, we should do a show. So we're gonna do two different segments as we usually do. The first one we're gonna be taking issue, and the issue we're gonna be taking is mythological in nature. We almost called it Good Mythical Evening as an homage to our two friends of the show, Rhett and his friend, Link. Link, we haven't met, but we met Rhett and he's great.
