Welcome back to the Daily Crypto Roundup. The XRP Ledger is preparing to bring back two major features that were previously pulled after researchers uncovered critical security flaws.
IBM's chief executive says quantum computing could become a real commercial business. Before the end of this decade, South Korea has confirmed a 22% crypto tax from 2027, and the chief executive of a crypto-linked money services company has been arrested over an alleged $40,000 murder-for-hire plot. The XRP Ledger's next software release is expected next week, placing five proposed amendments in front of the network's validators. The XRPLD version 3.3.0 release includes confidential multipurpose tokens, batch transactions, permission delegation, sponsored fees and reserves, and dynamic multipurpose tokens. The most interesting part is that batch and permission delegation are not entirely new. Both were previously proposed, but serious vulnerabilities were discovered before either became a permanent feature on the live network. Batch is designed to allow as many as eight transactions across different accounts to be grouped together. They would execute atomically, meaning either every transaction succeeds or none of them do. That can prevent one transfer succeeding while another part of the same operation fails. Researchers previously discovered a signature validation flaw that could theoretically have allowed an attacker to execute transactions from an account without owning its private keys.
Validators were advised to reject the amendment. An emergency server release marked it unsupported, and the feature never activated on Mainnet. Importantly, no user funds were lost. Permission delegation was designed to let an account grant another account limited authority without surrendering complete control. However, its original version contained a flaw that could have allowed one account to charge fees to another and potentially drain its XRP balance. It was disabled while developers produced a revised version.
Finding these vulnerabilities before Mainnet activation shows the testing process working. The question is whether the redesigned versions are now secure enough. No amendment activates simply because Ripple or RippleX proposes it. It must receive support from at least 80% of trusted validators for two consecutive weeks. The release starts a governance process. It does not guarantee that all five features will become active. Confidential multi-purpose tokens would use zero-knowledge proofs and encryption to keep balances and transfer values private, while still allowing authorized auditors or regulators to verify necessary information. Sponsored fees and reserves would allow a bank, exchange or platform to cover another user's XRP fees and reserve requirement. That could remove the awkward barrier where a new customer must first acquire XRP before using an application.
Dynamic multi-purpose tokens would let issuers decide which token properties can later be changed, allowing fees or metadata to be updated without migrating an entire asset. Together, the proposals move the XRP ledger further toward tokenized assets and institutional settlement, but validators must scrutinize the revised security design. Our second story concerns quantum computing, a technology that could eventually force major changes across cryptography and blockchain security. IBM Chief Executive Arvind Krishna says he expects quantum computing to make a measurable contribution to IBM's revenue and profit by 2028 or 2029
He also believes it could create around $1 trillion of economic value by the end of the 2030s.
Quantum computers are designed to solve specialized problems that are extraordinarily difficult for classical machines, potentially improving material science, drug discovery, logistics and cryptography. For crypto holders, the immediate question is whether quantum computers could break Bitcoin.
Bitcoin uses cryptography to secure private keys and transaction signatures. A sufficiently powerful, fault-tolerant quantum computer could theoretically threaten some of those systems. That does not mean somebody is about to switch on a machine and empty every Bitcoin wallet.
Today's quantum computers remain far below the level required to break Bitcoin at scale. They are noisy, error-prone and difficult to operate. The commercial breakthrough IBM is discussing concerns useful economic applications, not necessarily the ability to attack a global blockchain. The correct response is neither panic nor complacency. Developers have time to create and implement quantum-resistant signature systems, but decentralized networks should not wait until the threat is imminent. Major upgrades require research, testing, coordination and broad agreement. Quantum computing is becoming commercially serious, but it is not an immediate death sentence for Bitcoin. It is a long-term engineering challenge that responsible developers need to prepare for now.
