Welcome back to the Daily Crypto Deep Dive. Today, I want to start with a number that, on the face of it, makes absolutely no sense when you look at the crypto market. More than 3 billion dollars. That is roughly how much net money flowed into the major US spot crypto ETFs last week, when you combine Bitcoin, Ethereum, Solana and XRP. Bitcoin alone took in around 2.4 billion dollars. Ethereum added almost 690 million. Solana pulled in more than 188 million. And XRP added another 75 million.
Yet come into Monday, and Bitcoin is back around the $83,000 area, Ethereum is down, Solana is down, XRP is down, and large parts of the market are red.
So the obvious question is this. If billions of dollars are supposedly pouring into crypto, why the hell are prices falling? Before we get into it, a quick word from Kraken. As always, nothing in this episode is financial advice. Today is about understanding what the market is actually telling us, because the answer is much more interesting than simply saying institutions are buying, therefore Bitcoin must go up.
First, that enormous headline number needs some context. The $2.4 billion that entered US spot Bitcoin ETFs was the largest weekly inflow in almost a year. According to the Blox analysis of SoSoValue data, it was large enough to push Bitcoin ETF flows for 2026 back into positive territory, after they had been almost $5.8 billion in the red as recently as July.
BlackRock's iBit alone took in around $1.2 billion during the week, while Fidelity's FBTC added around $702 million. On the surface, that sounds enormously bullish. But here's the first thing that matters. $2.4 billion is last week's number. It is not $2.4 billion arriving in the market this morning. And when you look inside that weekly total, you see something really important. Monday accounted for roughly $999 million of Bitcoin ETF inflows. Tuesday brought another $714.7 million. Wednesday fell to $347 million. Thursday dropped to $190.6 million. And Friday came in at $134.5 million. So the flow stayed positive, but the pace slowed dramatically as the week progressed. That changes the way we should read the headline. Yes, there was huge demand. But saying $2.4 billion entered Bitcoin ETFs last week does not mean the same amount of buying pressure is hitting Bitcoin today.
And this is one of the biggest mistakes people make when they look at ETF data. They imagine one enormous buy order landing on Coinbase or Binance and immediately sending the Bitcoin candle vertically upwards. In reality, the plumbing is far more complicated. ETF creations, authorized participants, market makers and hedging activity all interact. The funds ultimately need economic exposure to Bitcoin, but buying can be executed, hedged and absorbed across different venues and at different times. And even if you have an enormous amount of genuine demand coming through ETFs, price is still determined by both buyers and sellers. If the other side is selling even more aggressively, price can fall while ETFs are accumulating. Think of it like two pipes attached to a tank. Three billion dollars is pouring in through one pipe, but an even stronger stream of selling pressure is leaving through the other. If you only stare at the inflow pipe, you think the tank should obviously be filling. It isn't, because you're ignoring the other side. In crypto, that selling pressure can come from existing holders taking profits, leveraged traders being liquidated, whales reducing exposure, market makers hedging and investors simply cutting risk because the wider economic environment has changed.
And that brings us to what is happening today.
Bitcoin traded near $82,600 earlier, down around 2% over 24 hours. Solana and Hyperliquid were down more than 4%, while Ethereum, BNB and XRP were also lower. At virtually the same time, Brent Crude pushed towards $108 a barrel. US. Treasury yields climbed. The 10-year yield moved above 5.2%. The dollar strengthened, and NASDAQ futures fell. Dan Kuss, Chief Analyst at LVRG Research, described Bitcoin's move as a risk-off squeeze following a sharp four-day rally, profit-taking and a liquidation wave exceeding $500 million. All happening while elevated oil prices and Treasury yields keep inflation concerns alive.
And that matters enormously because crypto is not trading in a vacuum. If oil stays high, inflation becomes harder to kill.
If inflation remains stubborn, the Federal Reserve has less reason to reduce interest rates and potentially more reason to maintain tight financial conditions. Higher Treasury yields then give investors increasingly attractive returns for owning lower-risk assets. Bitcoin doesn't pay a yield. Ethereum staking produces one, but Ethereum still carries substantially more volatility than government bonds.
