Creepshow, directed by George A. Romero and written by Stephen King, is a unique blend of horror, comedy and fantasy that takes inspiration from the classic EC comics of the 1950s. Released in 1982, this anthology film presents five distinct tales of terror, each with its own macabre twist. The movie is a nostalgic nod to the horror comics that once thrilled and terrified readers, and it captures the essence of those stories with a mix of humour and horror. The film opens with Father's Day, a story about a vengeful old man who rises from the grave to claim the Father's Day cake he was denied by his murderous daughter. This segment sets the tone for the film, combining dark humour with a chilling narrative. The second tale, The Lonesome Death of Geordie Viril, features Stephen King himself as a dim-witted farmer who encounters a meteor that turns everything it touches into plant life. While King's performance is intentionally over the top, the story lacks the punch of the others. Something to Tide You Over is a standout segment, featuring Leslie Nielsen as a scorned husband who buries his wife and her lover up to their necks on the beach. The tide rolls in and the tension builds, making this one of the most memorable stories in the anthology. Nielsen's performance is both menacing and captivating, showcasing his range beyond comedic roles. The fourth story, The Crate, involves a mysterious creature hidden beneath the steps of a college. Hal Holbrook plays a professor who sees the creature as a solution to his marital woes with his overbearing wife, played by Adrienne Barbeau. This segment is a masterclass in suspense and dark humour, with Barbeau delivering a delightfully wicked performance.
The final tale, They're Creeping Up On You, features EG. Marshall as a germaphobic businessman who finds himself overrun by cockroaches. This story is a fitting conclusion to the anthology, with its unsettling imagery and a satisfying sense of poetic justice. Romero and King have crafted a film that pays homage to the horror comics of their youth while adding their own unique flair. The use of comic book style visuals and transitions between stories enhances the film's nostalgic feel. Tom Savini's special effects work is a highlight, bringing the gruesome and fantastical elements of each story to life. While Creepshow may not be perfect, with some segments stronger than others, it remains a beloved classic in the horror genre, its blend of humour and horror along with its memorable performances and inventive storytelling make it a film worth revisiting. For fans of horror and those who appreciate a good scare with a side of laughter, Creepshow delivers a devilishly entertaining experience.
That brings us to the end of my review of Creepshow, and I'm giving it three and a half stars out of five stars.
