Welcome to episode 889 Consistency is the art of returning to yourself daily.
You know, this is a topic that comes up all the time. All the time. I get asked online, I get asked in person, I get asked from, you know, just from really great meetups or at events. And consistency is, you know, you see it everywhere, spoken about online too, and discipline and devotion, all these things. And yeah, you know, it's all of these things, but every now and then I like going deeper on these topics. And I was doing a little bit of my own kind of writing exercise, if you will. I was gonna do this often. Sometimes I'll pick a subject matter and I'll riff just because, because that's the writing and the writer and me. And I, on occasion, I put up content where I ask people like, you know, hey, like if there's any topic in particular, and this one comes up often. And so in this episode, there's, there's like 10 quick key points. I'm kind of keeping up with the theme of the last few. And then we're going to break them each down, but I want to bring them up forward first, and we're going to go into each one. And starting with the first one, which is consistency isn't doing the same thing every day. It's continuing to return to what matters. There's going to be a lot of, I want to reframe here because I think that sometimes we misconstrue the word consistency with monotony and mundane and boring, right? And, you know, same thing over and over and over again. And yes, there are definitely quote unquote, you know, routines in there and things that you will do on repeat. But the reason I put this part, it's continuing to return to what matters is because anything that you ideally want in life or love or would be devoted to, wouldn't you want to continuously show up and be more in search of what it is for you and who you are to it, whatever those things in your life are. And so consistency, I think when you reframe it like that, you're like, oh, wait a minute, I'm just showing up to the game. I'm showing up to my life with humility, without knowing all the answers, without forcing anything on anybody else, but just being out of curiosity, being humility, like, huh, like what's here for me? And how do I grow further with this, right?
The second thing I want to talk about is, you don't need to feel motivated to stay devoted. That gets talked about a lot of that. And I like that people bring up that, how do you work beyond the days you're not motivated? Because I'm gonna tell you right now, there are days that I am not motivated. Now, there are far and few between these days, just because after a while, you just get so into your own work that it is motivated. The motivation is almost built into it. But I'm gonna tell you right now, there are definitely days I wake up like, you feel like you're climbing a mountain that the peak just keeps growing. It's like moving the goalpost. And not the goalpost for the goals of life that you have to achieve, just that sometimes no matter how much further you are, you can still feel far away. I think we can all kind of relate to that. The next thing I want to talk about, too, is the boring reps are usually where the real work is happening. We see this in every aspect of our lives. I also want to talk about give something enough time before deciding it isn't working. Your rhythm doesn't have to look like anyone else's to be effective. That's why I'm always very careful about content. I love content online that is trying to add value and be contributory. I think that's a substantial part. And anyways, whether it's to make us laugh, make us more aware of something, how we can do something better. I just think that sometimes you see content that's like, basically it says, okay, this is the only way to be effective. It has kind of that tone, if you will, right? And then we have to be very careful because we have to go, okay, let me see if elements of that work for me. Again, this comes back to autonomy and agency. It's like, wait a minute, let me figure out, I think there's elements of that. For example, I like waking up early. Now, am I going to go do what some people will say out there that you must do these things in the morning? Maybe. Some things I tried, some things don't resonate, you know?
