It's been, like I predicted, a very dominant second set from her after she pulled away at the end of the first. All right, Sun misses that first serve.
Lands the second serve.
Gauff just keeping the ball in play.
Oh, that was close from Sun, but it was in. Sun comes to the net. But Gauff still keeping the ball in play. And Sun misses that volley wide. So Coco Gauff is through to the round of 16 in Beijing. Much easier match than her first round, which was a close three setter, but very, very impressive WTA debut run from Sun. I mean, she took out Lise and Anbuksa and really challenged Coco Gauff in this first set. So impressive showing from her. And in turn, that makes this a pretty impressive win for Coco Gauff as she adjusted to Sun's style of play. And she was down 5-4 on serve in the first set and dropped one game from there, just completely pulled away. But yeah, we are now going to talk about maybe the more exciting incident from today, which was the Medvedev defaults.
John Silk (2:12)
So I've not seen it yet, Amanda. I'm going to watch it now live on the channel. Obviously, I can't share my screen and that sort of thing, but I've got, I'm just hoping that this YouTube clip from Tennis TV, its headline, the title is Dramatic Finish to Medvedev Djokovic match. I won't say what it is, but yeah, I'm hoping that they... Ah, here we go. So what we got here, we got 5-3, love 15 Yeah, I was just checking the score on Google at the time, and I saw...
Okay, here we go.
Amanda (2:45)
Yeah, that's what was happening to me. And then I went, I was like, what happened? And I saw the video.
John Silk (2:50)
Right. So I saw it was 15-all on...
So I've just seen it for the first time.
I saw it was 15-all as Djokovic was trying to serve it out because I was trying to coordinate. I wasn't yet home, so I was just trying to coordinate for obviously the Coco Gauff match starting whenever this one concluded. And then the YouTube, sorry, the Google score update just went, match completed 5-3 Djokovic. And I thought, okay, that's a classic Google glitch. They do happen from time to time, where actually he's just won it 6-3 because obviously he was serving it out and I saw it was 15-all. And also it had been a while for the score to update. So yeah, I just thought, okay, he's won it 6-3. So it wasn't until I think this stream began. And then I think you mentioned, wow, that was a wild ending to the Medvedev-Djokovic match with the default. I've seen lots of defaults before, of course, including Djokovic similarly in the US. Open of 2020 I think it was, yeah, 2020, when, of course, he frustratingly, he was frustrating, he had just been broken by, about, not about his story, Karen Yabruster.
Amanda (4:01)
Yeah.
John Silk (4:02)
And carelessly, but was, it was a frustrating act, did it. So I've just seen it for the first time. Give me your thoughts as I watch this again.
Amanda (4:11)
Yeah, I mean, like, it was just really stupid from Medvedev, like the ball was out of play.
He hit it, like he could, why did he hit it back toward into the stands? Like that was not, that was just stupid, first of all. And like, yeah, he hit someone and the ball was dead. And like, it wasn't like a, you know, it's one thing with like, you're trying to get a ball and it accidentally goes into the crowd. That's one thing, but like he hit it into the crowd on purpose and it hit someone. So, you know, like it's a valid default.
John Silk (4:41)
Yeah, it is a valid one. The one thing I will say, having seen it now for the first time I've seen it again, it probably sounds worse because if you imagine if he hit that with full velocity, that could really hurt someone by hitting them.
