President Johnson made those remarks in the speech to the International Platform Association upon receiving the Association's Annual Award. Tandy Corporation announced the TRS-80 on this date in 1977 It was one of the world's first mass-produced personal computers.

Five days later, 11,000 air traffic controllers were fired. Mary Lou Retton won the All-Around Gymnastics Gold Medal in 1984 with a perfect 10 on the balance beam.

Retton scooped up five medals at the 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles. More than any other athlete, her success on home soil transformed her into a true American sporting icon.
On this date in 1987, a 22-cent stamp honoring author William Faulkner issued its first day cancellation held in Oxford, Mississippi, where Faulkner had served as postmaster from 1921 until his resignation in 1924 following accusations of negligence. Democrat Senator Daniel Inouye from Hawaii, Chairman of the Senate Select Committee investigating the Iran Contra scandal, he passed away in 2012 at the age of 88
In 2000, Texas Governor George W. Bush accepted the Republican presidential nomination at the party's convention in Philadelphia. Mr. Bush sent this warning to those who would oppose him.
