Farouk was only 16 when on the death of his father, King Fouad I, in 1936, he left Britain where he was educated to return to Egypt. From his accession to the throne throughout a reign which has ended in abdication, his country has been in the grip of political unrest and intrigue. How much of it was the fault of the king, only history can assess.
During World War II, the Allies faced many Egyptian problems, as this picture of the late President Roosevelt with Farouk serves to remind us. The king's meetings with neighboring rulers such as King Ibn Saud point to the strategic importance of Egypt in the Middle East. His marriage with Queen Nariman was an event of great significance for the Egyptian royal dynasty, for in Egypt, succession to the throne can only be through a male heir.
A son was born, Crown Prince Ahmed Fuad, for whom a regency council is now to act until he attains his majority at 18 Meanwhile, in the royal yacht, ex-King Farouk has gone into exile, while the future of Egypt and her relations with the West are questions still to be resolved.

President Nixon refused to obey subpoenas that ordered him to hand over the Watergate tapes on this date in 1973 Among those who disagreed with his decision was Watergate special prosecutor Archibald Cox. No relation.

And it was one more step toward the end of the Nixon administration.
A federal grand jury on this date in 1989 indicted Cornell University student Robert H. Morris Jr. for releasing the Morris worm, thus becoming the first person to be prosecuted under the 1986 Computer Fraud and Abuse Act. In 1990, the House reprimanded Massachusetts Democrat Barney Frank for his ties to a male prostitute. Frank had employed the man and allowed him to use his apartment. As House members prepared to vote on this date in 1990, Barney Frank spoke to them.

In 1990, President George Herbert Walker Bush signed the Americans with Disabilities Act into law. He hailed this as the beginning of a new era of civil rights.
