Oh boy, oh boy, oh boy, it's been a little while since I've been able to talk about the Shine-a-Man.
I was doing so many videos on Shine-a-Man a little while ago, and then, you know, all of the Frontier Labs just started committing ever so many felonies. And all of my commentary videos have been about Frontier Labs committing felonies for like the past two months. There just has not been enough oxygen in the room to talk about the Shine-a-Man anymore. So I'm kind of excited right now. I get to talk about Shine-a. So anyways, I think this is kind of an interesting story, and how it relates to, is a technology as valuable as you think it's going to be? Right, I've talked about this with virtual reality, right? So I'm a child of the 1980s. Is that how that works? Or am I a child of the 70s? I don't know, I'm a GenXer. Well, don't worry about this, I don't know. I didn't even know I was GenX until I started learning about the millennial. You know what, this is a true story, true story. I did not know I was GenX until I must have been like 22, 23, and I was at a technology event, and they were talking about the millennials.
And they're already talking about how important the millennials were. And I'm like, what the fuck is a millennial? And so I get this whole lesson in the millennial generation. I'm like, well, that's weird. I'm like, okay, so that's, again, I should, you know, this is real. Okay, so that's the millennials. And then I look at my parents' generation, I'm like, well, I know what the baby boomers are. And I was like, what am I?
Any other GenXers have that? Any other GenXers learn what the millennials were before you realize you were GenX? Because that is how little anybody gave a shit about our generation.
Anyways, right? So I've talked about this before, as a GenXer talking about virtual reality, right? So I grew up, I remember when the movie Lawn Mower Man came out, and I was all excited, exciting. I had the VHS tape for Johnny Mnemonic. I saw Johnny Mnemonic so many times, I could lip sync or whatever, whatever was going on there with Keona Reeves and all that kind of stuff, right? And there was this idea of what VR was going. We were all excited about VR. I remember when I was in community college, and they brought in those huge VR setups, where you would like shoot pterodactyls. Remember that? And you put on this famous headset thing, right? And you go and you shoot these very line drawing pterodactyls. Anyway, we all had this idea. We're like, wow, wow, imagine when this is good, right? And there's all this stuff, right? And so we hear out of the VR world, right? You get the Oculus and you get Meta or Facebook at the time buys our Oculus. And so we start being told, right? The age of VR is now here, right? Mark Zuckerberg comes out, it's like, it'll be just like being court side of an NBA game. It'll be just like you'll feel like you're on the top of Mount Everest. Right? And we had this narrative in our head. We had a story in our head. Wow, isn't that amazing?
I can be in my, my physical body can be in my living room, but my digital body can be on Mount Everest. That's what we thought it was going to be.
And then VR got good. I mean, to be clear, technology is fucking amazing. Like, you will not hear me be snarky about the VR stack, the stack of tech. VR stack is fucking awesome. I was at CES many years ago at this point, before COVID, a couple of years before COVID. It wasn't matters. Anyways, there's one of these companies, not a big name now, but they were creating the best VR goggles at the time, 4K, 4K back then. And I remember being like, I put them on, and I was like, oh my God, because it was, you didn't vomit, there used to be a lag. There wasn't a lag. Everything was crystal clear. I could use my hand, where my hands were automatically, like no latency transmitted into the virtual world. So, oh my God, this is amazing.
And then I took them off. It was like, wow, wow, the technology has finally gotten to where we've been wanting to be for 40 years.
Don't really care. It's just, oh, that's, yeah, that's not really being court side of the NBA game. As I was talking about Jerry Berg, Berg, Nergasm. God bless that guy. He's very big. He's a fat guy. He talks about being fat, not me. Anyways, I still remember, he had a friend with an HTC Vive. So his friend was a big VR nut. So Jerry Berg, and he did a video. He did a video of it. Jerry Berg goes to his friend's house, and he's playing like Fruit Ninja. And he literally killed the HTC Vive through sweat.
