Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to The Right Time, presented by PrizePicks. My name is Bomani Jones. Thanks for listening wherever you get your podcasts. Thanks for watching us on YouTube. Thursdays with Charles McDonald. That's what we do. Check him out on the Athletic live show. Let me talk about football and stuff. What's going on, man?

Charles McDonald (0:29)

I'm doing good out here in sunny Los Angeles now. Last time at this pod, I was definitely still a New Yorker, but I got that text from Ryan when he was like, you're on the West Coast, right? I was like, yeah. He was like, how does 9 a.m. Pacific sound? I'm like, you know what?

I'd be up anyway, so it's all good.

Bomani Jones (0:46)

Guess what just happened to you? That 9 just turned to 8 next time.

Look at you being a grown up.

SPEAKER_3 (0:54)

Hell yeah.

Charles McDonald (0:55)

I know, but I was up hell early today because I still haven't like, I've been here for like a month now, but I still haven't fully adjusted. I'm still somewhat living on East Coast time doing all this NFL stuff. Perfect. I will say, these 8 a.m. or not 8 a.m., but the game's ending at 8:30 p.m. There's something to that, but I tell you this. There's something to it, man.

Bomani Jones (1:14)

I think the most overrated thing about living in California is the 10 o'clock kickoffs on Sunday, because if you have anything to do, you can't.

Charles McDonald (1:24)

Yeah. Yeah, that's tough.

The 10 a.m. Luckily, this is my job, but like, so I kind of have to come here regardless, but the 9 a.m. kicks on Saturday really get me. Yeah, that's what I'm saying.

Bomani Jones (1:35)

Like, if you got anything else that you got to do, when you supposed to do it, right?

Charles McDonald (1:40)

I'm not waking up at 7.3 on Saturday, you know?

SPEAKER_3 (1:42)

Yeah, yeah, like 7.3 on Saturday.

Bomani Jones (1:44)

No, we getting ready for other things. You know what I'm saying? But, you know, I'm glad you out there in LA., doing you good. We got NFL action to talk about.

Lane Johnson retired out of nowhere, and we're not going to tell any jokes about that. No, sir.

Charles McDonald (1:59)

Nothing funny about that. No, no, no, no.

Bomani Jones (2:02)

I want to say this right fast, though.

Those who follow me know my big thing. I ain't going to lose it all over a joke.

I did a podcast the other day where I told a very, very funny series of jokes about OJ Simpson. One of them perfectly permissible. The other one little bit on the line. I got a phone call and they were saying to me, or trying to like break it to me softly, that they were going to cut those jokes out of the broadcast. I'm like, baby, you ain't got to explain nothing to me. You ain't even have to call me in the first place. If you think that this wasn't worth the risk, it's all good because we're not going down over a joke. I'll tell you the first joke. The second one, I'll tell you later. First joke was simply this. We were talking about Bijan Robinson, and we tried to figure out who the comp was for Bijan Robinson. Then I let it sit for a couple of beats, and then I stopped and was like, hey, I'm just curious. If he reminded you of OJ Simpson, would you say it?

Charles McDonald (3:13)

Okay, see, I don't think that that's that bad. Right. It was okay.

Bomani Jones (3:17)

It was okay, but it was okay. Now, the other one just wasn't worth it, is the point that I'm making.

Charles McDonald (3:25)

Okay.

SPEAKER_3 (3:26)

That's where Stephen A got himself in trouble. It just wasn't worth it.

Bomani Jones (3:30)

He was trying to make the point, man, things so bad in Philadelphia that dot, dot, dot, and all people heard was mental health joke.

SPEAKER_3 (3:41)

They didn't.

Bomani Jones (3:42)

He tried to come back and be like, yo, y'all misconstrued what I was saying. That's not the point.

SPEAKER_3 (3:47)

That's not it.

Charles McDonald (3:52)

The first one's fine. When I used to work, I used to do football 301 with Nate.

When we were doing the Harold Fanon draft, he was coming out of Bowling Green, got drafted by the Browns. I compared him to Aaron Hernandez. I was like, look, I'm not saying he's a murderer. Yeah. But have you seen this boy play? Yeah. See, even they got caught up. He was like, one of my friends who's a comic was watching that video. And he was like, oh, man, Stephen, they were doing crowd work.
