At long last, the struggle was over. The conqueror's cross-channel empire had been reunited under a single ruler. And it was Henry, the landless youngest son, who wasn't supposed to inherit a damn thing. But now, he was master of it all.
This was no trick of fate. Henry had spent his entire life outsmarting, outmaneuvering, and outlasting his brothers. He had engineered every step of this ascent, and nobody could chalk up his victory to luck. But you can't slouch on a stolen throne. And Henry had just shown the world that he wasn't satisfied with a kingdom, and that he would launch a war to steal even more if he thought he could get away with it. And so, dukes and counts were wondering when his gaze would turn on them, and what they might be able to do to keep that from happening. And as for King Philip, should he ever look up from his revels with Bertrada, he would realize that England and Normandy were in the grip of a man who was far more dangerous than Rufus ever was. And he'd realize that his own power was terribly under threat.
And so storm clouds were building on the horizon.
But Henry was sitting on this throne because he was the only son of the conqueror who understood that power in this new century wasn't going to be won on a battlefield. It was going to be calculated on a checkered cloth. And Henry had already mathed out his solution. If the crown was going to survive the continental storm that was brewing, England would need to be transformed from a conquered piggy bank into a terrifyingly efficient bureaucratic machine. Decades of invasion, extortion, and royal entitlement had turned England into a playground for corrupt barons and crooked officials. But that playground was no longer serving the interests of the crown. To hold his empire together, Henry is about to invent a whole new way of ruling. One built on ledgers, audits, courts, and absolute power. He will create the office of the exchequer to track every single penny owed to the crown. Royal judges will be sent to all corners of the kingdom to enforce uniform central control. He will reform the currency and will keep reforming it. And when moneyers violate his edicts, they're going to find out exactly what happens when you cross the Lion of Justice.
Henry had big plans, and he was ready to get to work. But it turns out the universe had some pretty big plans for Henry as well.
Tragedies, rebellions, institutional overhauls, and the constant looming threat of total collapse all lay in his future. And as Henry fights to keep his vise-like grip on his empire, he will rewrite English law, reshape Western government, and lay down the foundation for the modern state. Things are about to get calculated, precise, and completely ruthless in Season Eleven of the British History Podcast, The Machine.
