There's only main character energy here. Now let's get into it.
Welcome to episode 893, and this is the relaunch of Champions Obsess Over Fundamentals, Not Trophies. And that was a quote from Shane Parrish. And I remember doing a few episodes way back when, on different quotes and different authors and whatnot. But I love this idea of Champions Obsess Over Fundamentals, Not Trophies. We love the process. The trophies, awards, the accolades, I'm telling you they're the byproduct. It's not the same. It's not the same as being in the work of something you love, the obsession over craft and calling. I'm telling you, there's a difference. So this is a relaunch of Champions Obsessed Over Fundamentals, Not Trophies. Enjoy.
Welcome to Episode 492, Champions Obsessed Over Fundamentals, Not Trophies. Champions Obsessed Over Fundamentals, Not Trophies. That comes from Shane Parrish. There's a quote from him. I'll read you the fuller quote in a minute. If you want, he's the author of the book Clear Thinking.
In the show notes, recommended reading list, Clear Thinking, exceptional book. And Shane just really breaks down things, the complex into very simple, which you know I love. And on Twitter, I found this quote that he said. He said, Champions Obsessed Over Fundamentals, Not Trophies. While others chase revenue and fancy titles, outliers focus on what they can control today. Reading one more book, making one more phone call, and reviewing that email one final time. They know that excellence comes from perfecting the basics. Stop worrying about where the arrow lands. Master the art of drawing the bow. And I love this. And you know, you guys hear me talk about this often, that contrast between, you know, the titles and the revenue and accolades and all those other stuff. It's because really, you don't, like they're a byproduct of really great work. When you're in the details, when you're in the processes, and when you're really in the detail of the process and the work, when the accolades come, you're like, all right, cool, God bless. And you just keep moving. Like you're not chasing that as the outcome. You're chasing your work as the outcome. What do you think is the difference? Well, one is very fleeting. It comes and you're like, all right, well, what's my next goal? Whereas the other one is a lifetime. It's the life of you working and being in the process and your excellence and the basics and just perfecting them over and over and over again. Champions obsess over fundamentals, not trophies. And so that's why I often, you hear me talk about, be careful of chasing the revenue, the titles, the metrics, all these things, because you will achieve them one way or another. Either you will burn out trying to achieve them, or you'll achieve them, and something will occasionally feel missing. I have friends where they got the best sellers, they were the Forbes 40 under 40, or whatever it might have been. And it was interesting because it wasn't the same fulfillment that they had from doing exceptional work, knowing why they were doing it and who they were doing it for. I was like, well, yeah, because you find peace in your work that you love to do. External validation, it comes, and then all of a sudden, five minutes later, you're like, all right, now what I'm doing. So could you imagine if that's all you were chasing?
And I have found that the most successful people in any field, they share a common trait. They focus relentlessly on mastering fundamentals rather than chasing accolades. This mindset shift from outcome to process isn't just philosophical, it's the practical difference between sustainable excellence and fleeting success. And I was reflecting on this when I wrote this, and I wanna talk to you guys today about this idea. There's several of them. The misdirection of trophy hunting, the daily practice of champions, control versus influence, focusing your energy, the fundamentals of your craft, process orientation as competitive advantage and drawing the bow, right? To bring it all home. But I love this idea of sustainable excellence and fleeting success versus fleeting success. You want what you create to have this longevity and not feel like you're always arriving somewhere? At least that's my personal and professional take. It's like, why feel like you have to arrive somewhere when you get to just be exactly what you love to do and continue to work on on that craft, right? Trophy hunting. Let's talk about that. Many entrepreneurs and creators fall into the trap of fixating on external markers of success, revenue targets, follower accounts, and industry recognition. This focus creates a dangerous cycle where validation becomes the goal rather than excellent work. When we chase trophies, we optimize for short-term wins at the expense of developing the skills and habits that create lasting impact. So I had a few thoughts when I wrote that, and I'm gonna share that in a moment, and I wanna make a very key distinction. It is absolutely normal and well intentioned and good, actually, I think it's very good to be, hey, I wanna make sure that I am very profitable with the businesses that I'm growing, with my craft, or managing my art, or managing my creativity, or managing my passions, et cetera, like a business, absolutely. I mean, that's how we make it sustainable. But if you're chasing the metric of, if I only make this, then I'm worthy of that, then you're more in that energy than in the doer mode, in the figuring it out mode, and in really in your craft that makes pure excellence the most profitable thing you can ever do.
