So the headline I saw was, CDs are making a surprisingly big comeback. And why would you say CDs are making a big comeback?
**Jeff Burton** (2:16)
What's the reason?
**Moon Valjean** (2:17)
Well, let's see, I think...
**Tony Patrico** (2:19)
Because CD sales, so mid-year data shows, CD sales jumped over 16% while vinyl growth has slowed down.
**Jeff Burton** (2:28)
Is it people are aware of like how Sony just did the thing with people who bought video games in the past, they changed their whole thing and now you can't get access to video games you paid for in the past and they're...
It's this whole rigmarole and they're getting sued like crazy right now, but they're saying they own the rights to these video games and don't... No, no, no.
**Tony Patrico** (2:45)
Why is CD sales spiking while vinyl sales have slowed down?
And by the way, K-pop releases accounted for a chunk of the spike in CD sales. But still, even still.
**Moon Valjean** (2:59)
Maybe it's a chance for collectibles and the expenses in and out as far as manufacturing and consumer prices is less than a vinyl.
**Tony Patrico** (3:12)
Well, I will tell you why vinyl sales are down because it's friggin expensive.
**Moon Valjean** (3:17)
That's what I mean.
**Tony Patrico** (3:18)
Like, the average price of a vinyl record, a new one, is almost 40 bucks.
**Moon Valjean** (3:24)
Yeah, as I said, the last couple that I bought for $24.99, I went, ooh, what a deal. I was like, oh wow, that's interesting. That used to be the max I would pay.
**Tony Patrico** (3:32)
$37.22. $37.22 is the average price of a new piece of vinyl.
**Jeff Burton** (3:38)
It just got up about $20 in the last three years or so.
**Tony Patrico** (3:39)
Think about it, when we were younger, $20 would get us a new CD.
**Jeff Burton** (3:43)
Right, yeah, yeah.
**Tony Patrico** (3:43)
It saved up $20 to get that CD.
**Moon Valjean** (3:46)
Inflationarily speaking, it's probably right on the market, but it's weird, I was in Amoeba Music in Hollywood, and I was walking around with the label rep from Greek Fire, that's where I saw Matt Berry, and he's like, hey, your records are on a wall over here. And I was like, cool, what's the wall mean? And he goes, oh, the wall's only for special edition ones and different variants for vinyl. And I looked up, and sure enough, our record was up there for 60 bucks. I went, oh my gosh, 60 bucks, dude. And he goes, oh, that's standard for the variant wall.
He goes, actually, that's just one of the reasons they got you on the end, because it's like they're doing a special with a couple of my vinyls and maybe System of Down or something, I saw out there, 60 bucks.
