Knicks Trade Update. Many Knick fans do not want the Knicks to get a backup center via free agency.
Instead, they want the Knicks to trade for that backup. And I've mentioned a few names over the last few weeks that the Knicks have looked to trade for. Yves Missy out of New Orleans. Moussa Diabatte with the Hornets. However, CBS Sports has a different trade target in mind. Kel'El Ware.
CBS Sports NBA analyst Sam Quinn is pushing the Knicks to make a trade for Kel'El Ware. According to Sports Illustrated and CBS Sports, they give us this following information. When examining the New York Knicks options for Depth at Center, CBS Sports Sam Quinn floated Milwaukee Bucks center Kel'El Ware as a trade target, despite the fact that he was just a key asset in the Giannis Attentacompo trade. According to Quinn, this is my ultra aggressive backup center idea for the Knicks. Offered the Bucks a 2032 swap and a 2033 unprotected first for Kel'El Ware.
Quinn continues here by saying, CAA guy, two cheap years left, ultra talented, get him into a winning culture, try to develop him into the long-term four, one's heart ages out. With Leon Rose at the helm of the Knicks organization, his team will always be linked to any and every CAA client. A sports agency Rose was associated with for his entire career before taking the reins in New York. Where would be an interesting prospect for the Knicks? Quinn speculates that he could be a long-term four option for New York, but it feels like the proper spot for him is at the five. And the main reason he's pushing the Knicks to make this trade for Kel'El Ware is because Ware, similar to Karl-Anthony Towns, can help New York stretch the floor.
Despite being a seven-footer, Ware has shown the ability to be a fairly consistent perimeter threat. He shot 39.5% from the three-point line during the 2025-2026 season on three attempts per game. Not only would he be a solid piece off the bench, but he would provide similar spacing to what Karl-Anthony Towns currently gives The Knicks. Let me first say this, if Kel'El Ware was available via trade, and the New York Knicks actually had a shot to get him, without a doubt, I want The Knicks to make that trade. For a player like Ware, who's not even close to reaching his ceiling yet, and he's already this good, and he can get even better, yes, absolutely, without a doubt, if I'm The Knicks, I'm making this trade. And if the trade is only a few players, like Deuce McBride, Pecum Dottier, an unprotected first round pick, and a pick swap, I am making that deal each and every day.
But here's the thing, here's where I bring it all back to reality. The Knicks have tried to trade for Yves Missy in a package including Pecum Dottier, likely Deuce McBride, and a few second round picks. And they couldn't even pull that trade off. They couldn't pull a trade off for Moussa Diabatte, likely with Pecum Dottier being the featured player in that trade. If they can't pull off those trades with the assets they have available right now, what chance do they really have to make that same trade for a player like Kel'El Ware? It's just not going to happen. And even more than that, when the Bucks traded for Kel'El Ware, in that entire trade package, when they moved Giannis Attentacumpo, they asked for Kel'El Ware to be part of that deal. Why?
Because they know how talented he is. And he's one of the main reasons that trade happened in the first place. Ware has a lot of upside to his game. The Bucks know that, and they're banking on that. They want him to improve and get better in the league. And if he does that, in the Bucks' eyes, the trade will have been a success. That's why, in my opinion, a trade like this for Kel'El Ware, it's just not gonna happen. Besides CBS Sports' Sam Quinn, who's not even linking the Knicks to this trade. All he's doing is pushing the Knicks to make this trade if the Bucks would want to do it. That's all that's really on the table here. And if that's the case, there really isn't any connection to the Knicks trading for Kel'El Ware. The Bucks do not want to move him. And even if they did want to move him, the Knicks package of one first-round pick, a pick swap, and maybe a few players that they don't want, is that gonna be enough to get Kel'El Ware on this Knicks team? I don't think so. Remember, the Bucks wanted him included in that Giannis trade. If he was not included, I don't think that trade happens. So you're telling me, a player that the Bucks really wanted, that they have on their roster right now, they're just gonna give up for any old trade package, so they can get them off the team, get other players that they likely don't want on their team, and be happy with that trade?
