NFL Week 1, 2026, it is finally here. We're gonna get started on a Wednesday. We'll go down under on a Thursday.
We got the full slate on Sunday, followed by Monday Night Football. And our routine, our life, the section of the calendar we love is finally back. We are gonna go out to the Progressive Guest Line right now. Welcoming the guy who crushed it when he joined us last year. He knows the game. He's won a ring, Super Bowl Champion, over a decade in the National Football League. And he's got the podcast, Just Win Podcast, with our buddy Ted Winn from The Athletic. He is Marshall Newhouse, and he joins us on the Progressive Guest Line. We made it, Marshall. We survived the off season. Football is finally back. How are you feeling?
Marshall Newhouse (1:02)
I feel good. I think that summer is always tough. I mean, the Clippers franchise is in peril. So that was that got us through a couple of weeks. But yeah, football games, real ones are about to get played on.
Dustin Swedelson (1:14)
Yeah, I want to get your thoughts on all the action this week. We're going to get started on a Wednesday, which is certainly weird. You have the New England Patriots, all the drama of the off season with Mike Vrabel. They add AJ Brown to the roster.
They're trying to show that they're better than they looked like the last time we saw these two teams meet in the Super Bowl. Seattle comes into this one as a three-point favorite. Forty-four and a half is the total in the game. But Marshall, I've never seen anything like this. The Seahawks just dominated on their way to winning a Super Bowl. And it feels like nobody's picking them to repeat this year. Unique matchup, unique circumstances. How do you feel about these two teams coming into this game?
Marshall Newhouse (1:51)
Listen, it wasn't as close in the Super Bowl as it even appeared. Leading into the game and they proved that on game day.
I think this one's a little closer, but I still think the Seattle Seahawks are the superior team.
They have to replace a big vacuum in losing Clint Kubiak, who's now coaching the Raiders. But they have brought in a very similar style. And so I think there's going to be a lot of continuity for Sam Darnold and company. Lost a couple for guys at Fraisee, but largely intact is this team, especially this defense led by Mike McDonald was so potent shutting just about everyone down. And so I think the Patriots got a little better. Drake May is a year older, a year wiser. They've got an offensive line they feel like is short up more so than it was in the Super Bowl. But I just think Seattle is by far still the more superior team, especially coming out of the gate. There's always unscotted look stuff you don't know, wrinkles and things like that. But Seattle is still the more complete team.
Dustin Swedelson (2:47)
Talk to me about this game in Australia, because you've played overseas before. It's a weird situation. It's gonna be the Rams and the Niners. Luckily for both of them, they're pretty familiar with each other. Rams are three and a half point favorites, hyped off season, totals 48 and a half. Before we get into the dynamics just of these two teams, talk to us about what it's like for the players, having to do that long travel, play on a field where it's not really meant for football. What are some of the variables at play that maybe some of us don't consider?
Marshall Newhouse (3:16)
Yeah, and when I was with the Giants in the mid 2010s, I played in the UK and not even at Wembley, but at Twickenham, which was a rugby field and there was definitely a stark differences between that surface.
I think the time part was a little better than them being on Australia, which is literally halfway across around the world in the opposite direction. We don't even know what time zone they're in, most people. And so it's a whole different animal, but yeah, there's a lot of change, especially right out of the gate. You've gotten in no rhythm whatsoever, so you don't even know what to expect from guys. Young players are literally, their eyes are peeled open because they've been going crazy since the end of their respective college seasons. So there's a lot of variables that play.
We've seen two teams that have functioned completely different as far as travel. The Rams are kind of going in and out last minute as best they can to not, quote unquote, have the travel effects affect them that much, and that's a choice. Everyone's got their own sports science to back things up, and the Niners have been out there for a week. We'll see what actually applies to the actual gameplay on the field. The Niners have also just lost another defensive tackle I saw on the news. So their injury luck is not one that's going to travel well either. But I think you choose the more stable veteran led team, and I think that is the Rams in moments like this. But again, that surface, we don't know what the atmosphere is going to be like. I mean, I remember the Eagles played in Brazil against the Packers. These new places where you're the kind of test subject, everything's up in the air. We just have no idea.
