NFL Week 1, it is not quite done. We still have Monday Night Football left to play with the Chiefs and the Broncos. We'll talk about that a little bit later on in the program. I'm Dustin Swedelson, this is Cashing Out on VSiN, The Sports Betting Network, looking back at everything that went down earlier today.
And I gotta tell you, the Bills Texans game did not play out the way I anticipated. I was very, very close to betting the under in this one.
Luckily, I did not. Final score, Buffalo 36, Houston 31, Buffalo closed as a one and a half point favorite. We go way over. The total of 44 and a hook. This game had eight lead changes. Just kept going back and forth, back and forth. Josh Allen, though, did MVP things when it mattered in this one. That was the thing that stood out. EJ Strauss was fine, by the way. He was a lot better than he looked last year. Two fumbles, though. That is an issue. That's starting to be a trend here where you just can't hang on to the football. But Allen, to me, when it mattered in crunch time, he did what he normally does. And I know we all defend him. And I know people hate it who don't like the Bills or Josh Allen, that we give him so much credit. And maybe sometimes he doesn't get the blame that other quarterbacks get. But when his team needs him to elevate in a lot of situations, he does tend to step up here, at least in the regular season. Game-winning touchdown pass to Josh Palmer with 1 minute 36 left. He had two passing touchdowns. He had two rushing touchdowns, 334 yards. Kincaid had five for 130 His new weapon, DJ Moore, five for 100 through the air. And it is the first win of the Joe Brady era. The new head coach of the Buffalo Bills talked about the victory following the game.
Joe Brady (1:46)
There hasn't been a past to start, right? This is year one. So this is our first time here. I'm just proud of the guys. You saw a lot of the conviction, everything we kind of talked about.
We didn't care how pretty. There's no such thing as an ugly win, right? And just find ways. And we want the ball in our hands with the game on the line. Offense did a great job with that. And look, they moved the ball a little bit defensively. But we're just going to keep putting the ball down. And so proud for those guys in the locker room. And we got a short week. And if the first win, we don't get much time to think about it, because Detroit will happen really quick.
Dustin Swedelson (2:20)
I thought we saw an identity shift for Buffalo, right? John McDermott for so long, he's a defensive minded head coach. And they let the offense do certain things. But I thought the identity of the Bills offense dictated the style of this fight. They came out, they threw some haymakers against a super physical defense. I was really, really surprised at how much they were able to move the football consistently in this game. But Josh Allen and Company did their thing, man, on the road at Houston, a difficult place to play. This could be a preview of what we see in the AFC title game a little bit later on in the year. But I loved it. I think that's the shift we're seeing with Joe Brady. They're going to open this thing up. They're going to be wide open. He's going to let his quarterback cook and be in shootouts all the time. Just something to fly away when you're thinking about betting totals, depending on the opponent, with Buffalo going forward. As far as Houston is concerned, I am encouraged.
We don't do the moral victory thing a lot here. But I do think Houston, even though they couldn't come up with what they needed in the end to win this game, Stroud went 26 of 38 for 274 and two touchdowns. He has Nico Collins back, who had seven catches for 75 yards in a single touchdown. Nico Collins' reception prop is going to be probably something we look at a lot, and it's probably going to be in that JSN 6.5 range in a lot of situations throughout the year. And remember, before the season started, we were very high in the addition of David Montgomery.
It played out exactly how we wanted to. We have over 7.5 rushing touchdowns for Montgomery. We have 30 to 1 to lead the league in rushing touchdowns. He had two on the ground. He had one as a receiver today.
