Welcome, everyone, to Monday Match Analysis. I'm Gill Gross, and it is time for a preview of the 2026 Western and Southern Open in Cincinnati, the final Masters 1000, before the US. Open. Funky scheduling at this time of year. We've got a midweek Canada final coming up, All-American between Ben Shelton and Brandon Nakashima, who had never even been to a 1000 level quarterfinal up until this week. And I think there's a little one-day overlap where Cincinnati starts before Canada is finished. I don't love it personally, but it is what it is. It has been a really interesting couple of weeks in Canada. And I actually want to do a little bit of bonus content. And part of the reason for that is for the analysis of the Montreal final tomorrow, it's going to be more of a quick post-match versus a full-blown production Monday Match Analysis because tonight I've got a red-eye to Newport, Rhode Island because another good buddy of mine is getting married in Newport. Side note, I'm going to try to hit on the grass courts. Believe it or not, I've never played on a grass court. I don't like it, but it's true.
I've got to end that at some point. Hopefully, it's this weekend at the International Tennis Hall of Fame. Before I do quarter by quarter Cincinnati, I want to give you some Bonus Canada thoughts. I'm going to spread it across the men and the women because I was pretty concentrated on the women, particularly in the middle of the week when I did some on-site broadcasting from Toronto for Tennis Channel. So here we go. I think I've got six quick takes I want to hit you with. First one, Gauff right now could change my pick to win the US. Open.
The security in her serve and her forehand combined with this newfound confidence in net rushing, which I think she's always had the capability to do with her athleticism, with her positioning. Remember how much doubles she played early in her career? She is really one of the best volleys on the WTA Tour, can use her athleticism to close, to cover the net well, and has never really unlocked the confidence to use it like she has recently. And I'll timestamp this right now as I'm recording. It's 2-1 in her semifinal against Elena Rybakina, so I have no idea what's going to happen in that match. But I kind of see the technical side of her game coming together in a way that it has not come together throughout 2026 And yet, she came into Canada. She might move up, I don't know. But she came into Canada fourth in the race. Fourth in the race, despite the fact that I feel as if at no point really all year, has her serve in forehand been firing on all cylinders, and really just the technical side of her game firing on all cylinders. She's won a lot of wars. She's won a lot of three setters. She is a 10 out of 10 player mentally and physically. And that takes her very, very far. The way her technical game rounded into form in Canada, and what was the result? You saw her winning matches easily. You saw her winning matches in straight sets, which she hasn't done all year. To me, it's kind of like, all right, she is hitting a point where she's going to arrive at the US. Open feeling really good about her game, and then she has that crowd, and she has the ability to play clutch in big moments. I know she blew the match point with the nervy drop shot at Wimbledon, but for the most part, Gauff's track record is pretty clear. She wins a lot of close matches. She outperforms at majors when her game is in decent shape. All right. Number three.
