Hey guys, so happy to have you here. In this episode, Father Gregory and I are going to unpack Greta Gerwig. Everything that a Catholic should know about this very interesting filmmaker will be revealed. We're going to look at her major themes. Consider her films discussing Frances Ha, Little Women, Lady Bird, the Barbie movie. And if you hang in there, to the very end of the episode, we'll even get in a little bit to what we expect is going to come out in the Narnia movies.

Hang in there, this is an episode you won't want to miss. This is Fr. Patrick Briscoe.

Gregory Pine (0:33)

And this is Fr. Gregory Pine.

The first is that if you haven't already heard, we have a beautiful custom rosary made by our friends over at the Catholic Woodworker for the Godsplaining podcast. It's got a great weight. It's nice to hold in your hand. It's an heirloom quality thing for Catholics by Catholics. In this month of October and November, if you're listening to this episode a little bit later, you could get a special 15% off discount by being a Godsplaining listener if you like this rosary. But also our friends over at Catholic Woodworker have crafted two specialty rosaries for events this year. One in honor of Francis of Assisi, who is celebrating his jubilee. The other in honor of Fulton Sheen, newly beatified American saint.

An incredible moment there to commemorate.

They even offer customized rosaries. To shop any of these rosaries, the Godsplaining Rosary, St. Francis of Assisi Rosary, Blessed Fulton Sheen Rosary, or to customize your own, head on over to the Catholic Woodworker, the link is in the show notes.

The second announcement, are you a Catholic man looking to grow in your spiritual life? We have a great opportunity for you with our friends over at Exodus 90 You can in fact join my brother, Father Gregory Pine, on a spiritual journey to help discover how to grow in virtue. Father Gregory is going to lead us through especially the sins of speech and the way that our speech impacts our spiritual life. So to join a community of men intent on growing in virtue, on training their tongues as it were, and rooting out those sins of speech, join this next campaign for Exodus 90 Links and more information can be found in the show notes. Father Gregory, you are more of a movie man than I am, I think.

Gregory Pine (2:35)

Is that so?

Patrick Mary Briscoe (2:36)

I do think so.

I don't go to the theater very often, and even apart from going to theaters, I don't actually watch that many movies as in films. I realized this when in language class, you have to talk about films all the time, cinema, you learn all the words for movies, so that you could just casually chat about them with people.

Gregory Pine (2:59)

Quite naturally.

Patrick Mary Briscoe (3:00)

I realized that I had not seen a movie in a theater in quite some time. I like TV shows a lot.

Gregory Pine (3:07)

Okay.

Patrick Mary Briscoe (3:08)

I like The Chosen, I like The Office.

Gregory Pine (3:10)

Nice.

Patrick Mary Briscoe (3:10)

I like The West Wing.

Gregory Pine (3:12)

Great choices.

Patrick Mary Briscoe (3:13)

It's kind of my canon.

Gregory Pine (3:15)

Yeah, you've got like faith, work, politics, you need a fourth one, culture more broadly speaking.

Patrick Mary Briscoe (3:22)

Yeah, I probably do.

Gregory Pine (3:24)

Parks and Rec.

Patrick Mary Briscoe (3:25)

Nope. Everyone said that that would fill the office-shaped hole in my heart and that was a lie.

Gregory Pine (3:29)

Wow. Okay.

Patrick Mary Briscoe (3:31)

Now, maybe they're incompatible goods. I do think Ron Swanson is funny.

That's about that.

Gregory Pine (3:38)

Nice.

Patrick Mary Briscoe (3:39)

Yeah.

Gregory Pine (3:39)

Yeah, I am the converse slash inverse slash contrapositive. I don't actually know what I am by comparison to you, but I don't really watch TV shows so much as, I'll watch the occasional movie, definitely in graduate school. That was a kind of coping mechanism for managing my sadness.

In the years since, I've watched fewer. It's usually when I'm on an airplane that lasts, I mean like a flight that lasts longer than two hours, and I've been doing the apostolic hustle, and I get on the airplane and I think to myself, I'm going to work, and then within seven seconds, I'm like in that liminal state between consciousness and unconsciousness, and it's like I'm not going to get a good nap, which sometimes happens on airplanes, which I appreciate, and I'm like, but I don't want to feel the whole weight of my humanity for the next X number of hours. I'm just going to space it out a little bit.
