Can AI Ever Be Wise? Knowledge vs. Human Experience

Welcome to another Wisdom Wednesday episode here at The Midlife Chrysalis podcast. My name is Derek Gehl. I'm the CEO here at MEA and I am with our founder, Mr. Chip Conley. Chip, how are you?

Hey, Canada did not win the World Cup.

**Derek Gehl** (0:52)
Oh, there's a shock.

**Chip Conley** (0:55)
Wait, but has Canada been in the World Cup before?

**Derek Gehl** (0:57)
Yeah, we got stuff going on in Vancouver. You're asking the wrong person, man.

**Chip Conley** (1:02)
Oh, dude. Oh my God. No. Canada, yes, we've got matches, games in Canada and Mexico and the US. But I don't know if Canada has ever been in the World Cup, but all I know is maybe it has.
It's not, soccer is not a big sport.

**Derek Gehl** (1:17)
No.

**Chip Conley** (1:18)
It's all about the hockey.

**Derek Gehl** (1:19)
It's all about the hockey for sure. That's our sport. Legendary curlers.

**Chip Conley** (1:25)
Oh, curlers. Well, you and I don't need any curlers because we don't have any hair. Do people play hockey during the summer?

**Derek Gehl** (1:32)
Yeah. Yeah, yeah, yeah. I mean, Florida has been winning the Stanley Cup for too many. Weather has nothing to do with it anymore.

**Chip Conley** (1:41)
That's true. Okay.

**Derek Gehl** (1:42)
Yeah, yeah. No, that's our sport, but even that, I'm really disappointed that, you know, I mean, we haven't won the Stanley Cup in a while either. So, but yeah, no, you're asking the wrong part. I don't watch a lot of sports. Never have.

**Chip Conley** (1:54)
You're a straight dude, and I'm a gay dude, and I watch sports.

**Derek Gehl** (2:00)
See, we're throwing all the cultural norms out the window.

**Chip Conley** (2:03)
That's okay. You know what?

**Derek Gehl** (2:05)
Yeah.

All right. To know sports. So we're going to talk today about knowing things.

**Derek Gehl** (2:09)
Yeah.

And I had this interesting reflection when Oren, my partner and I were on the back roads of Baja. And in fact, today I'm leaving Baja after having been here for three or four weeks. I just love it here.
You guys come to MEA. Summertime is actually a great time to come to MEA, by the way. It's really nice because it's just warm and it's less crowded. And yeah, it's just beautiful. So when Oren and I were doing the back roads, I made a joke about the fact that AI would never understand what a back roads trip was like. And I came home and I asked AI to create a cartoon. If you want to see it, it's my May 27th Wisdom Well post from Subair to Conusair. You can find that on the MEA website. I don't know if it's on my sub stack. I think it might be.

It might have been one of the ones we pulled. But it got me thinking, Derek, you know, I'm dangerous. In Spanish, and I think in French, but I'm going to use Spanish here. Mi español es muy malo, pero estoy mejorando, getting better and better.
In Spanish, there are two verbs to describe to know. There's saber and then there's conusair.
And saber means you know something. It's like to actually know some, have book knowledge. I know the answer. Do you know where the bathroom is? I know how to speak Spanish. Se habla Espanol.
No se, I don't know. So often saber is almost like what you could ask AI.
It's the things in the world that are tangible and somewhat factual. So I know the capital of Paraguay. Actually, I don't know the capital of Paraguay. But if you knew the capital of Paraguay, you could use saber. Now, conocer is a different conjugation. It's a different kind of verb. It's to be familiar with a person, place, or thing.
So you say, I know Maria.
Conozco a Maria. I know Santa Fe. Conozco Santa Fe. So do you know this restaurant? Conoce este restaurante. I want to get to know Japan. Quiero conocer Japan. So the interesting thing about conocer is it speaks to personal experience. I know a person, I know a place, I know a thing.
