C-Mac RIPS Yankees trade deadline and George Lombard Jr. gets the call! | 'Go Get 'Em'

The Carton Show with Craig Carton & Chris McMonigle

August 5, 2026

Chris McMonigle is not holding back on the Yankees and Brian Cashman's performance at the trade deadline, ripping the GM for only adding Luis Garcia Jr. and Heliot Ramos while AL East rivals like the Red Sox and Rays both beefed up at catcher, New York's biggest need.

Let's go get them. Welcome to the Go Get Em Podcast, McMonigle. Here with you on this Monday night, the night of the trade deadline, and we didn't need that, did we?
For a second there, I thought we were going to have a fun night. I thought we were going to be able to enjoy ourselves for an inning, for an evening. The offense was going to come back and pick up Cam Schlitler, who was awful.
Big home run from Garcia, the newest trade acquisition. The one thing we're really putting our hopes in at this trade deadline, it's a big home run to give them a lead, and immediately, the Yankee pen gives it up, and they get their doors blown off, and lose a heartbreaker. I mean, I guess it's a heartbreaker. It was about five minutes' worth of feeling like they were going to win the game, but it was going to be a really fun win to cap off what was a miserable day. And I mean, I guess we'll start with the trade deadline. Actually, you know what? Let's just get, let's start with the game, and then we'll get to the trade deadline a little bit on the game.
And then we'll get to what was a disastrous trade deadline. And for those of you who heard me on the show, I got to react live on The Carton Show on WFAN.
I was able to do that live. So maybe you come into this at least having a little bit of my opinion on the trade deadline, which was, I would imagine most everyone's opinion. It was a terrible trade deadline from Brian Cashman. It might be his worst trade deadline that I can remember. And then maybe there's some recency bias in there. And certainly, you know, Garcia so far one night in has panned out with two hits in the big home run. But like, he's had other trade deadlines where the acquisitions don't work, but they didn't address any of their needs, by any of their need needs. Didn't address them. Shocking, a shocking, stunning, despicable, awful, miserable, depressing trade deadline from the New York Yankees. But first, let's get into the disgusting, miserable, despicable, what are the words that I use?
I don't know, all of those words to describe this game tonight, where, I mean, look, Kam Schlitler didn't have it.
Walk in the ballpark from early on, I think it's a four-pitch walk to start the game, gives up the homerun to Burleson.
Just one of those nights, he had absolutely nothing. We haven't seen many of them. There's the night against the Tigers.
There was the night against the Dodgers, where he couldn't get deep into the game, but it wasn't this bad.
This was just a terrible night for Kam. Didn't have it at all. Walked six, walked five guys, which is unheard of for him. Still struck out six in three innings, which is very much heard of from him. But he gives up the homerun to Burleson, gives up the double to Furman, gives up the RBI single with two outs to Church, and that's it. Three innings, and it's just what you expect. Hill comes in, he gives up a homerun to Burleson, who has three homeruns on the night. But the offense wakes up, amazingly enough, the offense gets going, and how ironic. There was a couple of things about this game that were ironic about the trade deadline. One, Wells was having a great game. Wells did have a great game. Wells gets a single, the first hit of the game after Caballero draws the walk in the third, he gets a single on a good at bat, on a high fastball, doesn't try and do too much with it, doesn't try and pull it, hits a line drive to center, right? Then after the McMahon homerun, he gives, he has the two, excuse me, after the McMahon single in the fifth, he hits the two run homerun on an absolute bomb. He's making good, he's good with the ABS, you got to give him that. For the most part, he's really good with the ABS. He gets a couple of challenges, he throws out a base stealer. Wells was having a great night after every one of us, myself included, screaming that they didn't get a catcher. He ends up having a good night. Then when Grisham hits the homerun and it's within 6-3, and then McMahon leads off for the homerun, Caballero with a bomb, Grisham with a double, a hustle double at that, and then Garcia, who we are all hanging our hopes on, and again, we talked about it the other day, arguably the best bat that got moved at the deadline. I mean, they did, and we keep hearing a platoon player, platoon player, yes, he doesn't hit lefties that well, and because they have Goldschmidt and because he's a first baseman, it might be a little bit of a platoon, but this dude leads the National League in slugging. He's one of four players who has slugged in 550 and drove in 70 runs. He's not just, when you say platoon player, Rosario is a platoon player. Right now, McMahon, I guess, is a platoon player. Yeah, there's a chance, depending on how he swings it against lefties, or because they have Paul Goldschmidt, who they believe still matches lefties, you're going to see him not play some games against lefties, but I think it's unfair to call him a platoon player.
