SPEAKER_6 (1:18)
Hey, yeah, I got a 2025 Toyota Corolla LE. I bought new. It's got 18,000 miles on it. And a friend of mine who was a mechanic mentioned that the 8 oil, fully synthetic that's in the car is not good. It's too thin. And I did a search on it, and it says, yeah, it's too thin. A lot of people are using up to 16 weight.
What are your thoughts on that?
Russ Evans (1:52)
Well, we have had no problems with these engines so far. They've all been working just fine using that oil.
And the factory, if they were concerned about it, they would change it. We've seen that evidence before on other vehicles, because if they're warranting it, they definitely want whatever needs to be in there to protect it, because they don't want to have to replace it for free. And I usually go by that. If the engine is an old model year, so if we've got an engine that was built in 2020, and now they're no longer building that engine, it's out of warranty, but they're building the same size engine, and basically the same in 2023, and they've increased the oil weight, not dropped it. I'm concerned that maybe the original one probably could have benefited from that better oil, but typically they've been going down. Most of that is for fuel economy.
SPEAKER_6 (2:51)
Yeah, that's what I heard.
Russ Evans (2:52)
Well, you may see some, there may be some changes coming out too, as engines go forward, not back, because they, if they have a law in place that says, this is our rating for economy and the oil, everything for 2025 If they change it in 2026, it doesn't mean they go back and they retrofit to the 2025 That's what it was when they did it. That's what applies.
But as we go forward, if you see the same engine model being built, and next year in 2027, they increase that oil weight, you could feel pretty good that they were only doing it for emissions because they have now rolled back as far as I know, the fuel economy standards that were getting pushed very high. I believe they've gone to, Chris could look it up here, maybe at the break, but the 35, I think, corporate average.
Shannon Nordstrom (3:43)
They either stalled them or rolled them back just a bit.
Russ Evans (3:46)
Because they were going to increase, so these manufacturers were dropping oil weights, changing things to try to get the economy as high as they could get it. So if I see a 2-liter engine built in 2025 that uses 0W16, but in 2026, it's the exact same engine, and now it's using 5W30, I'm thinking, why did it change? Was it just for economy reasons, whatever? So I'd look at that. But just because people on the internet say, I use this oil, it's what you got to use, it's too thin.
