Broncos were in Pads for the first time of training camp today, and I've got all the updates you need to know from practice. But before we dive in, make sure to like and subscribe to this video. And it starts off with a little injury scare for the Broncos. This is the first injury scare that we've had during camp, and it involved center Luke Wattenberg, who left practice after going down hard during a one-on-one drill. Wattenberg was clearly in pain and left practice with a trainer and did not return to practice. However, after practice, Sean Payton said he believes Wattenberg will be fine, but will undergo more tests just to make sure. Alex Forsyth stepped up in his place and was praised by Sean Payton after practice as the head coach called him, quote, one of the smarter guys in the offensive line room and added, quote, he's really talented. Forsyth has obviously had to step up in Wattenberg's place just last year. In fact, made a start against the Kansas City Chiefs in Kansas City. So if the Broncos need him week one in Kansas City, he's very familiar with that. But according to Sean, probably shouldn't get to that. So we'll see if Luke Wattenberg is out there tomorrow at practice and I'll have an update for you. Let's dive in to some good news. Riley Moss literally stole the show at practice today. During team period, Riley Moss had an incredible interception off of Bo Nix. Bo Nix threw a jump ball to Cortland Sutton down the left sideline. Sutton appeared to get his hands on the ball in the air, but on his way down, Moss stripped the ball from Sutton for the interception. The interception got the defense hyped according to Talanoa-Hofenga and I can count on that because I heard them go absolutely crazy.
An important note on that play, it could have been called dead at the line of scrimmage or it could have been a free play depending on who jumped first. Wasn't able to see who, but there was movement at the line of scrimmage before. So Bo could have just been throwing that up because he knew it was a free play. But regardless, the ball was in the air and Riley made an incredible play. After practice, Hofenga said that despite being white, Riley is one of the most athletic cornerbacks he's ever played with. He said people don't believe me all the time because of the white part, but he is that athletic and we saw that on display with that play right there. Sean Payton added that Moss is moving around really well. He emphasized the really part of that and he loves the way Riley competes.
Moss also had a nice pass breakup on Jalen Waddle and 7 on 7s. Riley Moss, while he has allowed a couple of catches in camp overall, has had a fantastic start to camp. And a big reason why we're not talking about Pats or Tannis, they don't target Pats or Tann. It's so rare that Pats or Tannis is getting targeted in this camp. That just means Riley Moss is getting double the targets and making double the plays. So great start to camp for Riley Moss. It's also a great start to camp for the Broncos pass rush, which was in full attack on the first day of pads. They continued right where they left off last year. Nick Bonito, Jonathan Cooper and Jonah Ellis made Bo Nix's life tough in the pocket today. During the second play of team period, Bonito and Cooper would have split a sack before Nix just took off. I mean, they met in the backfield and Nix would have gone down, but you can't touch the quarterback in training camp. Then Bo just snuck out for a little gain, but let's not kid ourselves. That play was going nowhere outside of a five yard loss for a sack right there. And even when they didn't get the sack, they were in the backfield early and often in practice today. And I know this isn't the pass rush, but Alex Singleton made a fantastic tackle for a loss on JK Dobbins. Denver's front seven did a great job eating up the offensive line, allowing Singleton to get into the backfield for a loss. It was quick, it was forceful, it was a great play by the Denver Broncos defense. Bo Nix's final pass of practice was a beauty. He bounced back well from that interception on Riley Moss. With Moss in coverage this time, in tight coverage, by the way, Nix hit Pat Bryant on a perfectly placed back shoulder throw about 25 yards down the left sideline. Pat Bryant adjusted perfectly at the last second to get separation from Riley and make the catch. Bryant also made that catch a nice catch earlier in practice too. He shows up when the ball is thrown his way. And after practice, the head coach praised Pat Bryant saying, He's really smart and it'll be easy creating his role. We know Sean Payton absolutely loves Pat Bryant and so do the receivers. He seems to step up anytime the ball is thrown his way. Speaking of Sean Payton calling plays, we got a little insight into his role in the play calling this year. We all know Davis Webb will be the Broncos primary offensive play caller this season.
