Does a good job of leading the songs, doesn't he? That's a blessing. So glad to have my wife with me. I'm so glad she gets to come with me. She makes me look so much better. And we are from Oklahoma City. As Pastor mentioned, we taught for 26 years at Heartland Baptist Bible College, retired in May of 2024, and have been busy just traveling, preaching, doing different things, whatever God has for us. You know, actually the word we use is repurpose instead of retire because we haven't retired from the work of the Lord. We just kind of repurpose what we do. So anyway, it's good to be with you. My clock, so I'm still on Central Time. So it's only a quarter after 6 at home.
No, we got to get on the train. So we'll try to, we'll be done. I want to get back. And this is all new stuff for us being from Oklahoma. We don't ride trains to go to places. But we've enjoyed your pastor. It's a blessing. See what God's doing here. This building is just amazing. I was hoping that we get to hear Ms. Jessie play the organ for us. But that didn't happen. But would you go in your Bibles with me? Two places. All right. We're going to go to First Kings, Chapter Number 19, First Kings, Chapter Number 19
And then I also need you to mark First Samuel, Chapter 30 So if you have a ribbon, what a preacher friend of mine calls them, that little hangy downy thingy in your Bible, Mark First Samuel, Chapter 30 And when we get to First Samuel 30, we'll be toward the end of the message. But First Kings, Chapter Number 19 So you got to multitask a little bit. And I think you can probably do that.
So First Kings 19 is where we'll start. And then later on, we'll get into First Samuel, Chapter 30
All right, everybody ready? First Kings, Chapter 19
And Ahab told Jezebel all that Elijah had done, and with all how he had slain all the prophets with the sword. Then Jezebel sent a messenger unto Elijah, saying, So let the gods do to me, and more also, if I make not thy life as the life of one of them by tomorrow about this time. All right, what's she saying? You've killed my prophets and you're going to die. That's what she's saying, right? Now notice in verse 3 And when he saw that, when he saw that message that was sent to him from Jezebel, that he arose and went for his life and came to Beersheba, which belongeth to Judah, and left his servant there. But he himself went a day's journey into the wilderness and came and sat under a juniper tree. And he requested for himself that he might die and said, It is enough now, O Lord, take away my life, for I am not better than my fathers. All right, we'll leave off reading right there. And so I've titled the message tonight, Overcoming the Snake Bite of Discouragement. Overcoming the Snake Bite of Discouragement, or God's Anti-Venom for Discouragement.
You ever been there?
Maybe, maybe you're there even right now in your life, and you're discouraged and ready to give up. We want to encourage you from God's Word tonight. Would you bow your heads? We'll ask the Lord to bless, and as we pray, we'll get started. Lord, I thank you for all that you do in our lives, for your Word that guides us, that is a lamp into our feet and a light into our path, that can keep us from sin, David says in Psalm 119, wherewithal shall a young man cleanse his way by taking heed, thereto according to thy Word. So thank you, God, for your Word that encourages, that strengthens, and that guides us. And I pray that if there be one here tonight that doesn't know Jesus as their Savior, that tonight would be that night, that they would trust you. We love you, and we thank you, God, for everything that you do in our lives. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen. Now, you probably wouldn't know this, and you don't know us, but looking at my wife, you probably wouldn't know that she actually, well, she grew up in a redneck home.
Her uncles, so she had four or five uncles, and their names were Fats, Rastus, and Butch.
Now, her dad had a nickname. His name was Eugene McClure, but his nickname was Banjo. I don't know why they called him that. Maybe it's because he was shaped like that. I'm not, I'm not sure, but she grew up in a very redneck home. They used to love to camp out, and they're camping out, and it was very rustic. I mean, they would go out by a creek there in central Texas, and her dad was a catfish fisherman. He trot-lined fish. I don't know, some of you may not know what that is. It's a line of about 20, 25 hooks, and they stretch it across a creek or in a cove, and they weight it down with bricks, and they bait the hooks up, and you go out and you run the trot line. You get on your boat, and you pull it up like this, and you come to a hook. If there's a catfish on it, you dip the net underneath it, lift it up, and you put it back in, you put it in the boat, and you move on to the next one. Now, how redneck my father-in-law was, one day he caught a catfish and cleaned the catfish, and it had eggs in it. So he took the eggs out, and he told my wife and her brother and sister that it was caviar. And so he made them eat catfish eggs. Well, I've never had caviar, but I don't think it comes from a catfish. And so they would go camping, and they didn't have a camper. You know, my idea roughing it when I camp out as if the generator and the RV goes out and I can't watch ESPN on the satellite dish. But they would go out and they would camp out, and they're camping out not in sleeping bags, but just throw a blanket on the ground, and they lay on the ground. So they're camping by this creek one time, and my father-in-law decides that, and they had a little boat with them, and he decided that rather than get in the boat and run the trot line, go out there and check the hooks, that it wasn't that deep, so he just decided that he was going to walk. Now, that's not the primary reason why he decided to not use the boat. Most of the time, almost every time he'd go down to the boat, there would be snakes either in the boat or all around the boat. So he's decided he's going to walk across the creek. All right, so I'm thinking, right? Think with me, where do water moccasins live? In the water. So he decides one night right before dark that he's going to walk across this creek and run the trot line. So it's getting about dark and my wife and her mom and brother and sister getting ready for bed. And all of a sudden, they hear this blood curdling scream. And it's their dad and husband, and he's crying out, screaming, Oh, help me, help me, a snake's got me, a snake's got me. And they're running down to the creek, and they're just crying and they barely see him. All they see is this water splashed in him and him, him screaming, Oh, help me, a snake's got me, a snake's got me. And all of a sudden, he gets deathly quiet. And they're thinking he's dead.
