BREAKING: Sean Payton signs 5-year extension with the Denver Broncos and Week 2 OTA notes

This is the DNVR Broncos Podcast, live from the Toyota Lounge. Had a busy day at the DNVR Bar. This place is packed. And Yaya is really feeling himself because Mexico is up 1-0, and an extra player as well.
Yeah, whatever that was. No Zac in studio today, Ryan out of town. So we've got our guy, Jake Schwanitz, who you guys know well from the DraftPod, from the Buffs Podcast in studio with us to talk through a whole bunch of stuff. We also have Zac on the Xfinity Mobile call in line, who is still down at the Broncos facility where I left an hour or so ago. And there he is. How's it going, Zac?

**Zac Stevens** (0:44)
Fellas, it's going absolutely fantastic, but no one's doing as good as Sean Payton signing a new five-year contract, which runs through the 2030 season. We don't know the details of the contract yet, but pretty safe to say that he got a substantial raise on top of the pretty good money he was already making, and this is 100% deserved. This is exactly what the Broncos should have done. I know there was some speculation from others in the past saying, like, maybe Davis Webb just takes over as a head coach after this season. No, let's put some respect on Sean Payton's name. What he's done for this franchise gives him to eight and nine after total embarrassment on and off the field his first year here, then finally gets a quarterback he likes, and what's he do even as a rookie, goes to the playoffs in his first year. What's he do in the second year? Builds off that pretty much as good as you can by taking the team to the AFC Championship game, the number one seed in the AFC, and likely to the Super Bowl if Bo Nix doesn't get hurt. Sean deserves all of this. Also guys, in the process, Sean has evolved as a coach and done what's right for the team, not necessarily what's right for himself. We saw that on Perfect Display today by talking to Davis Webb for the first time after Sean Payton gave up late calling duties to him and making him the offensive coordinator. So this is a fantastic day out here for the Broncos. Their new facility is almost done. We saw some great things on the field and I'm pumped to talk with you guys about it.

Love it, man. Zach, this is coming straight from the chat. Is this the best situation in football that the ownership group has set up the Broncos with as Mexico scores their second goal and the DNVR Bar explodes again?

**Zac Stevens** (2:28)
I thought they were just happy to see you on the show.

**Jake Schwanitz** (2:31)
It could be that. Is it a coincidence to ask my first question and then the crowd pops here?

Can you? He can hear us at least, okay.

**Jake Schwanitz** (2:39)
He can. But George Payton's lockdown, now Sean Payton's lockdown, you got a quarterback in Bo Nix that we all believe in who's on a rookie deal. We'll get to that extension when it comes. But has this ownership group set up this to be the best situation in football for right now?

**Zac Stevens** (2:54)
Yeah, it's certainly hard to argue against that, Jake. You have the best ownership group in the NFL. That's pretty darn clear from everything they've done. You have arguably the best coach in the NFL as well with Sean Payton. Now he's tied to you through at least the next five seasons. And then George Payton has also proven that he is one of the best talent evaluators and general managers. And then on top of all of that, Jake, the combination of those three together, working together, has been nothing but pure success for the Broncos. Now obviously they need a world championship, but Jake, they're looking at not just a world championship. They want two or three over these next couple of years when they have this trio together. And then you mentioned it, Bo Nix as well. And then on top of that, you get Vance Joseph to be your defensive coordinator, a guy that should have become the head coach last year. You get to keep him for at least another year. And then Davis Webb, a guy that also could have been a head coach last year before he pulled himself out of other opportunities in order to stay with the Broncos. And I'm excited to talk about Davis and the first impression he made because, hold the cow, he was already loved by Broncos country, but now actually getting to hear him talk, he's going to be loved even more.
