SPEAKER_3 (1:23)
Thank you. Hello, my little friends.
Trevor Henderson (1:28)
We are the Watchers.
Michael J. Fielding (1:30)
Observers.
SPEAKER_5 (1:31)
Being strange, powerful, even, occult.
Kale Brown (1:34)
Spiritual, the mystical and magical.
SPEAKER_3 (1:39)
Into the horrified, into the horrid, the secret, the unseen world.
Kale Brown (1:45)
Appalling and gruesome.
Amy Young (1:47)
Welcome, welcome, welcome, welcome to the Mayfair Watchers Society.
Michael J. Fielding (1:57)
Didn't think much of the Flying Shrimp. Not the weirdest hallucination I've had during a 14-hour haul.
SPEAKER_3 (2:04)
But this?
Kale Brown (2:06)
This is new.
Hey! Talk to me! What's going on here?
SPEAKER_3 (2:13)
What?
Michael J. Fielding (2:14)
Are you seeing this shit?
SPEAKER_3 (2:16)
Wait, are you seeing this?
SPEAKER_5 (2:18)
Yeah. Oh, my God.
SPEAKER_3 (2:23)
Oh, thank God.
The big one, too? Yep.
Michael J. Fielding (2:29)
Oh, you're the first out of towner I've met who can see the big one.
Amy Young (2:33)
Nobody else in my family can see it.
SPEAKER_3 (2:35)
And it seems like half the town can't see anything at all.
Amy Young (2:38)
Yeah.
Kale Brown (2:39)
Everybody behind me started laying on their horns when I hit the brakes trying to avoid clipping the thing's leg.
Amy Young (2:44)
As you can see, now they're just moseying on by like nothing's wrong.
Michael J. Fielding (2:49)
Incredible nobody's lost a mirror yet. Thought it might be all in my head until I saw how many of you folks were milling around in the street.
Amy Young (2:58)
What's going on here?
Michael J. Fielding (2:59)
Shouldn't somebody be doing something about that?
SPEAKER_5 (3:01)
You'd think so, right?
SPEAKER_3 (3:03)
We can't get the cops or the exterminators to listen to us, but look at that thing.
Trevor Henderson (3:09)
You see it, right? You see it?
SPEAKER_2 (3:13)
Yeah, I see it. Kind of hard not to.
SPEAKER_3 (3:16)
What is it?
SPEAKER_2 (3:17)
Some sort of mother shit?
SPEAKER_3 (3:19)
What?
Michael J. Fielding (3:20)
You know, like aliens.
SPEAKER_3 (3:24)
I don't think so.
SPEAKER_5 (3:27)
Hey, are you filming?
Amy Young (3:29)
Uh-huh. I was going to send it to some of the other guys on this route.
Trevor Henderson (3:33)
Can you send it to me too? So I can prove it's not just us?
Amy Young (3:37)
Yeah.
Michael J. Fielding (3:38)
Just give me a sec.
Kale Brown (3:42)
Two seemingly rational strangers discussing something they can see, but onlookers cannot. This is the latest in a series of recent viral videos that have had both scientists and commentators scratching their heads. While some have called the validity of the clip into question, MFC News has confirmed the identity of the woman filming as Texas-based long-haul truck driver Cassandra Barnes. Barnes declined an interview with MFC News, but did go on record to state that the video is authentic, and MFC News was able to verify the presence of the original recording on her phone. But what does this mean? Could it be that there's more to the bizarre phenomenon than a simple case of mass hysteria?
We welcome psychologist Dr. Billie Knowles to the show to discuss.
Thank you for joining us, Dr. Knowles. What can you tell us about what we're looking at here?
Amy Young (4:33)
Hi Jessica.
Yeah, certainly some strange things going on in Mayfair right now. Even with this development, the likeliest explanation remains that this is an outbreak of mass psychogenic illness. There can be some difficulties in applying that as a concrete diagnostic assessment, because it's a phenomenon with such a high level of variance in how it presents. But nothing I've seen so far has convinced me that it couldn't be the case.
