But I'm not going to after five games, seven games, sit here and say the coach has to go, because I'm going to give him an opportunity to figure out how to fix all of the deficiencies that they identified in year one. But year two is going to be a very uncomfortable con... We were already going to have an uncomfortable conversation at seven wins. Let me be clear.
At seven wins, we were going to have to have a conversation about can this coach get you to championship level?
Mike G (1:36)
Agreed.
Ike Jones (1:37)
At five wins, now the conversation shifts to can this coach get you bowl eligible in year two? And that's not the place I want to be in year one with a coach. And we got to have conversations about the athletic director and his ability to hire a football. We got to have a lot of different kinds of conversations at five wins.
But I don't think the conversation is fire the head football coach this early in year one.
Mike G (2:02)
Yeah.
Ike Jones (2:02)
But that does not mean that going into year two, those conversations are going to be very uncomfortable. Yeah.
Mike G (2:09)
I don't think that it's, I don't think the hot seat conversation is unfair if certain conditions are met in year one. I mean, you lose to Arkansas. If Vanderbilt ends up being your only SEC win, if you go one for nine in the SEC or one for eight, yeah, I think that there's some questions about whether this is for you. Correct. Right. If you lose to an FCS team, I think there's some questions about whether this is for you. All right.
I just think they brought more heat on themselves with some of the decisions that they made personnel wise in the off season because you had five, four and a half to five star talent on this roster. A lot of players, when they met with this new coaching staff, said, well, we're not feeling them.
Hey, I'm not going to tell you which players, but they told me. Well, Mike, I don't know. Right? And what I told a lot of them in return was, you know, relationships aren't... It ain't...
Ike Jones (3:14)
You're not going to figure that out.
Mike G (3:15)
You're not going to figure that out in a couple of weeks.
Ike Jones (3:17)
Yeah.
Mike G (3:18)
Right. But what you need to do is you need to ask... For the players who asked, for my advice, I said you need to ask good football questions about what the plan is, about how they plan to use you, about what have they seen of your tape, where do they evaluate you coming in? How secure is your job? Right? Like, you know, like when Cam committed here, there was no, he's gonna have to compete for our starting spot. We, that's all new, he was gonna play. I think it's okay to have players like that, that are just so good. You're like, well, this guy's gonna play for them. You know, there are very few players that meet that criteria, Ike.
But they knew that about at least some of the guys that they brought in.
And if you're a player and you're trying to make the decision, you're just trying to figure out where you, where you fall. That's it. Am I one of the guys who's got a spot secure? Am I gonna be fighting for a job, which is where most players are going to fall?
The personnel decisions, man, I don't know how five games in, you can look at the personnel offensively at least, and say that this is SCC caliber personnel.
Because if they are, then it's you, right? It's the system. I'm saying, I'm not saying it couldn't be both, but in year one, I'm giving you the benefit of the doubt that it's not the system. Even if there are some signs that might point to problems, remember in year one? I was like, I don't know. Everybody was like, oh, wait till he gets his players. I was like, I don't know, guys. There's some things I see here, right? That look iffy to me about how they're developing players offensively, about what I'm hearing about how practice is going. This is all year one stuff. And it didn't feel like they were getting the most out of the guys, even the guys that they brought in from the portal.
