Two o'clock straight up!
It's The Carton Show with Big Mac on a gorgeous Thursday afternoon in New York City. Phone number to join, 888-808-1019. Got a great show for you today. You may have noticed the football season is back in effect here in New York City.
Chris McMonigle (0:23)
Three and one.
Craig Carton (0:23)
As the New York Yankees do what the you New York Yankees do, and that is lose at home, watch another team celebrate the end of a series in embarrassing fashion. And I don't want to hear anybody telling me, oh, the Yankees got screwed by the Ump's. That was the right call. Yeah. It was the right call. The wrong call was batting Trent Grisham lead off, as we discussed all day yesterday. What a disaster. And if the Yankees, and I don't think they were or are, were on the fence about, do we bring Boone back for another year?
Assuming that was his decision, the answer becomes no.
Good afternoon, Big Mac.
Chris McMonigle (1:07)
How are you?
I'm doing miserable. Oh, don't be miserable all day. You lost the game.
Craig Carton (1:11)
You lost the series.
Chris McMonigle (1:12)
It's what you do.
Craig Carton (1:13)
It's what you do.
Chris McMonigle (1:15)
This is... They're miserable.
Craig Carton (1:16)
Yeah.
Chris McMonigle (1:17)
Go ahead. Well, then don't ask the question if you don't want the answer, my friend. Don't ask me hypotheticals.
Craig Carton (1:21)
I got songs for you to play today.
Chris McMonigle (1:22)
Don't ask... No, I'm just telling you, the only thing I want to talk about, quite honestly, is Grisham. It's just...
I screamed and yelled about it when we heard the lineup yesterday, and it's just an utterly dumb...
And he's made a lot of them, right? There's been a lot of decisions that the fan base has been fed up with over the last handful of years. Nesta Cortez in the World Series, none of them are as dumb as putting Trent Grisham, who hasn't hit a lick, all postseason, and really all year. Now, he had good numbers against the starter. For me, that was enough to at least put him in the lineup, you could argue. You could argue taking him out of the lineup, but to put him at the leadoff spot and to let him hit all five at-bats. They're against the lefty and the fifth. They don't pinch hit him. Then the game and the season ends with Trent Grisham up there and Ben Rice your best hitter on the on-deck circle. That cannot happen. It was a hideous decision to put him in the leadoff spot. This is not second guessing. We said it yesterday. I said it yesterday.
Craig Carton (2:23)
His batting average was 180, 107 and he played appearances.
Chris McMonigle (2:27)
He was the worst leadoff hitter in Major League Baseball this year. But it's even beyond that. He was not swinging the bat well. Nothing justified giving him that at bat over Ben Rice. It was just idiotic. It's the one thing. There's a lot. There's a lot of feeling about how yes, it's the same nature year in and year out. Yes, Aaron Boone, is it time to move on? Brian Cashman, is it time to move on? Where does this team go? The Young Corp. But how do they get that magic? And a lot of it, while it's not anyone's fault and the Yankees didn't get screwed, the 96 team had magic and Jeffrey Maia gets the home run. This team doesn't have the magic. Like there's just something about it. They can't perform in the biggest games. And I know there's going to be a lot of people who think it's because of this exactly, and it's because they don't do this, and it's because they build the team like that. And I'm not so sure the answer is clear cut. Bottom line is, they don't perform in the big moment. And Aaron Boone, as much as I'll defend him at times and tell you he had a great year this year, and I think he's better than people think, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah. It doesn't matter. Last night, he hindered his team's ability to win the baseball game by putting Trent Grisham lead off. And we had to watch the final at bat of the season go to him and watch him swinging a pitch in the other's batter's box after taking every other damn strike he saw the entire game. And we got to watch Ben Rice because we were hopeful in one at bat at the beginning of the game, maybe Ben Rice has somebody in front of him. Like it's just, it makes no sense to me. Ben Rice had been killing it. Give him the most at bats.
