Okay, everybody, here we go again. Welcome to a brand new episode of Brad & Mira For the Culture, The Other People Show's weekly pop culture assessment.
I'm Brad Listi, and I am joined as always by my millennial friend and co-host, the catastrophic and confused Mira Gonzalez, who is making a triumphant return after being away last week in Mexico. Hi, Mira.
Mira Gonzalez (1:37)
Hola, Brad. Que tal? Como estas?
Brad Listi (1:42)
I'm happy you're here. I got to say Mira, that I was making a bet with myself that you were going to cancel today. I thought you were going to have diarrhea or something. You were going to have some lingering illness from your trip.
Mira Gonzalez (1:53)
Nope. I got that Mexican stomach. That food just sits perfectly well with me, not a single stomach issue. It was like stomach-wise, probably one of the best trips I've been on.

Today's episode is brought to you by Viking, publisher of Darkness Becomes Bright, on the brief life and immortal art of Edgar Allan Poe by Emily Ogden. Darkness Becomes Bright is a fascinating and intimate inquiry into Poe's shadowy life and horrifyingly compelling work. It is an exploration of why we are drawn to darkness in art.
Darkness Becomes Bright illustrates how Edgar Allan Poe's vision echoes across the generations, allowing us to make peace with our flawed humanity. Once again, the book is called Darkness Becomes Bright on the Brief Life and Immortal Art of Edgar Allan Poe by Emily Ogden, available from Viking. It is the official October pick of the Other People Book Club. Be sure to join the Other People Book Club at otherppl.com.
Mira Gonzalez (2:50)
I didn't know that Edgar Allan Poe had a short life.
Brad Listi (2:53)
Yeah. He died in the street, I want to say. When I was in Baltimore for AWP, I was walking around in his old neighborhood, like on the harbor somewhere. I think there's a bar that I went to that I didn't go in, but I stood outside of it and it was the last bar where he was ever seen alive.
Mira Gonzalez (3:11)
Wow. How old was he when he was hit by a car?
Brad Listi (3:15)
No, I don't think he was hit by a car. I think he just died in the street.
Mira Gonzalez (3:18)
Oh, he just died in the street.
SPEAKER_5 (3:19)
Okay, that's even worse.
Brad Listi (3:21)
He's in the 1800s. There were not cars, Mira. What are you talking about?
Mira Gonzalez (3:25)
I don't know, horse coaches or whatever the fuck, ran over by a fucking horse and I don't know, a dinosaur pulling a fucking cart. I don't know what they did.
Brad Listi (3:32)
He got hit by a city bus in Baltimore in 1840
Mira Gonzalez (3:36)
Got hit by the metro.
Brad Listi (3:37)
Yeah.
Anyway, that's the Book Club book. Kind of excited to read it. I need to know more about Edgar Allan Poe. I feel like I don't know enough about him and I probably should.
Mira Gonzalez (3:46)
When I was in Mexico, there was a street named after him. I don't really know why. It's like Kaya, Edgar, Allan Poe.
Brad Listi (3:52)
Oh, really?
Mira Gonzalez (3:53)
Yeah. It was bizarre.
Brad Listi (3:54)
Well, he's a global brand.
Mira Gonzalez (3:56)
He's in the middle of Guadalajara.
I believe we have audio from some of my favorite people in the world, perhaps, minus my husband or whatever. I think they're above him. Siri and Kaya. In these notes, you've written our Australian superfans, but I would like to correct that and say my Australian superfans. So we've been e-mailing, and I love you and I'm in love with you, Siri and Kaya. So let's listen to what they have to say.
